Yard Jockey operates gasoline or diesel powered tractor trailer combination bringing trailers to loading docks to be unloaded. Backs trailer to loading docks, performs safety checks to secure trailer, opens bay doors, and assists dock workers in loading/unloading trailer. Being a Yard Jockey maintains radio or telephone contact with dispatcher to receive delivery or pick up instructions or to receive notice of changes in scheduled delivery or pick up. Typically requires a high school diploma. Additionally, Yard Jockey requires Commercial Driver License (CDL) - Class A. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Yard Jockey works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline. To be a Yard Jockey typically requires 1-3 years of related experience. RESPONSIBILITIES
- Safely operate and maneuver yard jockey vehicles within the designated area.
- Transport trailers to and from loading docks.
- Perform regular inspections and maintenance on yard jockey equipment.
- Coordinate with warehouse staff to ensure efficient movement of trailers.
- Adhere to all safety regulations and company policies while on duty.
- Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors to coordinate tasks.
- Utilize CDL A license to operate commercial vehicles as required.
- Utilize core skills such as driving and commercial driving in daily tasks.
- Utilize premium skills such as manual transmission, freight handling, and knowledge of various types of trailers.
- Utilize relevant skills such as delivery driver experience and forklift operation when necessary.
Qualifications

- Ability to perform automotive repair tasks
- Familiarity with tractor-trailer operations
- Experience with refrigerated trailer handling
- Competency in operating flatbed and tanker vehicles
- Previous experience as a delivery driver
- Proficiency in operating forklifts and heavy equipment
- Experience with dump trucks, roll off trucks, and route driving
- Ability to load and unload vehicles efficiently
