    PRIMARY PURPOSE/ POSITION SUMMARY:
    The Director of Athletics (AD) will lead the Dominican University Department of Athletics, which is committed to student athlete growth and prepares them to compete at the highest level athletically. The AD will work with coaches, staff, and administration to set the vision for the department which will center on developing student athletes, and setting the culture for innovation and collaboration leading to athletic success.
    The position requires a deep understanding of student athletes to ensure that department practices and policies focus on helping student athletes achieve their academic goals while maximizing their athletic experience. The AD will also lead the department in its commitment to ensuring mental health and physical wellbeing of the student athletes.
    The AD plays a key role in the operations of the departments and is tasked with working with coaches, staff, and other university departments set strategy and execution for recruitment and fundraising. This role also provides direct feedback and leadership for the recruitment strategy, key tactics in the identifying and shaping the recruitment pool as well as the management of data and reporting to university administration on movement towards goals. Strategic growth opportunities as it pertains to the opportunity for athletic growth and new program launch will be central to the success of this role.
    An emphasis on department operations which is inclusive of budget management, and direct oversight of compliance, diversity, equity, and inclusion, athletic training, and the direction of the hiring and onboarding process for individuals in the athletics department. With an eye towards innovation, this role will also seek efficiencies to be gained within the day to day operations of the department while also seeking new opportunities through the launch of new emerging sports.

    JOB COMPONENTS/PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    Strategy
    • Sets the vision for a culture of collaboration within the department and across the institution building focused synergies with the divisions of enrollment management and student success and engagement
    • Sets the vision for innovation and athletic strategic growth through the launch of new and emerging sports
    • Designs and implements a new sport test and launch process that allows for the institution to quickly test and launch new and emerging sport opportunities
    • Creates a culture that centers the voices of athletic department employees creating and implementing professional development and growth.
    Recruitment
    • Develop the recruiting vision and plan for the Dominican University Department of Athletics in partnership with the enrollment management division.
    • Oversee resource allocations for recruiting initiatives and efforts to reach athletic recruitment goals
    • Lead the athletic admissions processes from point of inquiry through tuition deposit in coordination/collaboration with the university Office of Admissions.
    • Identify key tactics in assisting coaching staff with identifying and evaluating athletic recruiting prospects and future student athletes
    Operations
    • Provides oversight of athletic facility coordination and maintenance, which includes approving scheduling and contracting of athletic events and developing and maintaining policies for use of athletic facilities
    • Provides oversight for budget input and expenditures for intercollegiate athletics and club sports; provides oversight of the annual inventory of supplies and equipment in the athletic program. Manages the support service needs for both club sports and intercollegiate athletic programs, including payment of officials.
    • Prepares, monitors, and administers the annual department budget
    • Responsible for collecting and analyzing data and preparing annual report(s) on the intercollegiate athletics and club sports programs to guide decision-making.
    • Provides oversight for the development of contest schedules, arrangements for practice sessions, and transportation for the intercollegiate athletic program.
    • Provides oversight for the hiring and training of new Department of Athletics employees
    • Supervises and conducts annual performance evaluations for coaches, administrative staff, and support staff within the Department of Athletics.
    • Provides oversight for the Athletic Training Department, ensuring staffing and resources are adequate for maintaining the best possible health care for student athletes
    • Assists Head Athletic Trainer with management of secondary insurance policy and Athletico contract.
    Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Justice
    • Develops and implements strategic initiatives that help the Department of Athletics attain measurable diversity, equity, and inclusion goals that contribute to a diversified student body and workforce.
    • Assists in the development and implementation of the athletic strategic plan to support and manage diversity, gender equity, inclusion and belonging, and Title IX issues.
    • Develops, manages, and executes services that address the recruitment, retention, graduation, and professional placement of all student-athletes; assesses and identifies the challenges of BIPOC student-athletes as they relate to first-generation college students, socioeconomic and diverse backgrounds and transitioning to college,
    Student Success/Health &Wellness
    • Creates an environment that centers player safety, their holistic development, and is responsive to student mental and physical wellbeing.
    • Responsible for advancing department-wide health and well-being by coordinating the development and implementation of comprehensive strategic wellness planning in collaboration with appropriate campus partners
    • Promotes understanding of the importance of holistic student development actively advocating for the value of students’ developing life-long habits of mental and physical health, which supports them in achieving academic and personal success.
    • Provides strategy for student-athlete academic progress planning and presence of campus-based intervention strategies.
    • Provides guidance for a comprehensive student wellbeing plan which is inclusive of strength and conditioning, mental and physical wellbeing, and support for preventative and rehabilitation support.
    • Guide and provide oversight for the implementation of academic support plan in partnership with the Division of Student Success and Engagement, such as implementing tutoring and other academic best practice requirements to influence student success, retention, and graduation.
    • Reviews data on student success, student belonging, and implements interventions to address the student experience
    Compliance
    • Leads the Department of Athletics compliance program, developing and implementing processes in rules education, monitoring to ensure alignment and compliance with regional and national athletic associations (NAAC & NCAA) and institutional policies and procedures.
    • Manages eligibility information as part of the student-athlete certification process, collaborating with coaches and athletic department staff, as well as other institutional departments, including Office of Admissions, Office of the Registrar, Financial Aid, and academic affairs/student success.
    • Oversees the athletic eligibility certification process and authenticates eligibility of student athletes in compliance with all institutional and NCAA regulations.
    Fundraising
    • Establishes fundraising goals and priorities based on department objectives, designs strategies to meet those goals, and monitors progress against goals.
    • Creates and implements comprehensive strategies to increase both dollars and donors to the athletics program, building engagement of individuals with the department of athletics, teams and coaches, and creating and refining gift opportunities based on the department’s priorities.
    • Partners closely with University Advancement to identify, analyze, and qualify donor interest to maximize giving. Provides input to overall planning efforts for the University's donor prospects related to Athletics, working collaboratively to develop communication strategies for projects, including publications and public presentations.
    Perform other duties as requested, delegated or assigned.
    Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in athletics administration, sports management, or a related field preferred
    • Leadership experience in athletic administration and/or athletic advancement.
    • Capacity to form and articulate vision and strategic direction for athletics consistent with the university’s mission
    • Strength in building & fostering relationships with athletic alumni and other stakeholders
    • Experience in the identification and launch of new sports
    • Expertise in securing resources necessary to achieve the vision and strategic initiatives of the department
    • Ability to lead, mentor, support and provide oversight for athletic coaches and staff
    • Experience working with diverse populations and a commitment to diversity in the recruitment and retention of coaches, staff and student-athletes
    • Proven track record of working collaboratively with campus leaders, faculty, residence life, physical plant and other departments
    • Ability to establish collaborative relationships within the community to advance athletic goals
    • Experience providing development and oversight for the athletic budget
    • Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion
    • Documented success in fundraising and commitment to the development of alumni and donor relationships.
    • Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate with a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders
    • The ability to work nights and weekends in order to fully participate in athletics, recruiting, and college-wide programs and events
