Welder joins, fabricates, and repairs metal and other weldable material by applying appropriate welding techniques. Interprets blueprints, specifications, diagrams or schematics to determine appropriate welding process. Being a Welder inspects completed welds to determine structural soundness. Familiar with and complies with all safety requirements and protocols for working in a hazardous environment. Additionally, Welder may prepare the materials and set up for a welding device or robot. May be required to complete an apprenticeship and/or formal training in area of specialty. Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Welder works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. Possesses a moderate understanding of general aspects of the job. BASIC FUNCTION:
Under general supervision, uses advanced skills to work with all metals required, and to weld metal parts together according to layouts, blueprints or work orders using welding processes for given work areas.
MAJOR DUTIES:
A masterly knowledge of welding techniques, tools, materials, equipment and blueprint reading is required. Ability to read precision measuring tools is required. ASME or AWS certification is also required. Must be capable of producing top quality welds in all areas. Minimum amount of rework or scrap will be accepted. Skills may be gained through practical experience and/or specialized training. Knowledge of all functions in given work area is required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Frequent climbing, bending, twisting and/or lifting approximately 55 pounds (and periodically heavier loads approximately 75 pounds) will be required. All welders must install 60 pounds spools of wire on own welding equipment, as necessary.
