Veterinary Technician assists veterinarian with exams, surgeries, and first aid. Collects and documents case history and treatment details. Being a Veterinary Technician monitors vital signs and condition of animals being treated and provides nursing care. Takes X rays, EKG, Ultrasound, and performs various lab test including urinalysis and blood counts. Additionally, Veterinary Technician depending on state regulations, may administer anesthesia, injections, and perform dental prophylaxis, catheterization, and other procedures under supervision of a veterinarian. Instructs pet owners on how to administer medication and other animal care skills. Typically requires an associate degree. Depending on state, may require RVT certification. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Veterinary Technician works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function. Qualifications: Veterinary Technician - Licensed. The right candidate must possess a pleasant professional attitude as well as a strong desire to learn and master nursing techniques. They must be self-motivated, a team player, and thrive in a fast-paced environment. Candidates should be comfortable multi-tasking and possess the ability to think and act both quickly and independently. Excellent client communication and patient-care skills are required.
Job duties include, but are not limited to: triage of incoming patients, collection and analysis of lab samples, diagnostic imaging including dental radiographs, management and nursing care of hospitalized cases with varying degrees of stability, administration of enteral and parenteral medications, effective communication of treatment plans with clients, surgical preparation and assistance, and anesthetic management.
