Job Title: Overnight Vet Technician/Assistant

Hours Required: Overnight shift, weekends, holidays, rotating availability required.

Registered Vet Tech Certificate preferred.

Two plus years experience in veterinary technician/veterinary ICU experience preferred.

Employee must be able to lift up to 50 pounds; work 12-13 hours shifts overnight; multitask a heavy caseload daily; and stand up for long periods of time throughout a shift.

KEY PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES SPECIFIC TO THIS POSITION:

Nursing Care

• Medicates patients either orally, giving injections, or applying transdermals, and understands proper techniques for handling the patient while medicating. This includes IV, IM and SQ injections.

• Monitors and records observations regarding all patients in the hospital and reports observations to a doctors. Also fills out hospitalization note for each inpatient.

• Understands how to collect vitals and perform a physical examination on patient.

• Documents in medical records all conversations, observations and status reports regarding patients, conversations with clients, and doctor’s instructions.

• Communicates with doctors in a professional manner and understands and carries out instructions as directed and in a timely fashion.

• Able to operate treatment room equipment properly. Taking a blood pressure with the Doppler, setting up and monitoring IV fluids, completing blood transfusions per doctor's orders

• Setting up other monitoring equipment such as pulse Oximetry, and ECG.

• Able to place IV Catheters in multiple veins.
• Veterinary Knowledge

• Understands that proper hand washing should be practiced before and after each patient. Proper PPE should be worn to protect employee and patient.

• Understands basic CPR and emergency protocols

• Understands the proper protocols for handling an emergency during the night and who to contact.

• Knowledgeable on medications and dosing of medication.

• Performs various restraints for procedures needed to be done to the animal, making sure the safety of the animal and the doctor or technician performing the procedure is of primary concern.
• Computer Skills

• Knows how to navigate within practice management software to perform any task needed and records in medical records.

• Enters charges, prints lab requisition forms, enters and prints prescriptions, schedules appointments.

• Understands how to make changes to orders in smartflow and Ezyvet per Doctor’s orders.

• Knows how to send x-rays to IDEXX telemedicine for interpretation.

• Ensures the clinical area, including the operating room and procedure room, is clean and ready for the start of each business day utilizing daily and weekly cleaning checklists.
