Veterinary Technician assists veterinarian with exams, surgeries, and first aid. Collects and documents case history and treatment details. Being a Veterinary Technician monitors vital signs and condition of animals being treated and provides nursing care. Takes X rays, EKG, Ultrasound, and performs various lab test including urinalysis and blood counts. Additionally, Veterinary Technician depending on state regulations, may administer anesthesia, injections, and perform dental prophylaxis, catheterization, and other procedures under supervision of a veterinarian. Instructs pet owners on how to administer medication and other animal care skills. Typically requires an associate degree. Depending on state, may require RVT certification. Duties:
- Assist veterinarians during examinations, surgeries, and other procedures
- Perform laboratory tests, such as blood work and urinalysis
- Administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as directed by veterinarians
- Take and develop X-rays
- Prepare animals for surgery and monitor their vital signs during procedures
- Provide post-operative care and monitor recovery progress
- Clean and maintain equipment and work areas
- Educate pet owners on proper animal care and medication administration
- Handle dogs, cats, and other animals with care and compassion
Experience:
- Previous experience working in a veterinary clinic or animal hospital is preferred
- Strong knowledge of veterinary terminology and procedures
- Familiarity with X-ray equipment operation
- Experience with equine care is a plus
- Proficiency in laboratory procedures and sample analysis
- Ability to handle dogs of all sizes and temperaments
Skills:
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
- Knowledge of aseptic technique for maintaining cleanliness and preventing infection
- Familiarity with pet grooming techniques is beneficial
