Utilization Review Technician conducts utilization reviews to determine if patients are receiving care appropriate to illness or condition. Monitors patient charts and records to evaluate care concurrent with the patients treatment. Being a Utilization Review Technician reviews treatment plans and status of approvals from insurers. Collects and complies data as required and according to applicable policies and regulations. Additionally, Utilization Review Technician consults with nurses and physicians as needed. Position is non-RN. May require an associate degree or its equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor. May require Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT). The Utilization Review Technician gains exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function. Occasionally directed in several aspects of the work.     Position Summary

    The Director of Utilization Review is responsible for directing and overseeing the Utilization Review Program for In Patient and Out Patient services. This includes the implementation of case management scenarios, consulting with all services to ensure the provision of an effective treatment plan for all patients, oversees the response to requests for services and interfaces with managed care organizations, external reviewers, and other payors.

    Job Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Direct the response to request for services, including the initial response, the assessment and referral process, the designation of appropriate level of care, initiating services, and follow up activity
    • Create a structure that best meets the needs of the organization, particularly department organization related to supervision and assignment of staff
    • Ensure that a system is developed to provide continuity of care and communication with family and appropriate referral sources, and ensure the system is evaluated and reviewed regularly

    Qualifications

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education: Degree in nursing, social work, mental health/behavioral sciences, or related field preferred. Combination o feducation and experience may be considered.

    Experience: A minimum of five (5) years direct clinical expereince in a psychiatric or mental health treatmnet setting. A minimum of one year of managing a related function is preferred. Experience in patient assessment, family motivation, treatment planning and communication with external review organizations or comparable entities.

    Licensure: LMSW, LPC, RN or LVN required.
