Underwriting Supervisor oversees activities of the underwriting department. Provides supervision for a group of underwriters who review, analyze, and inspect insurance risk. Being an Underwriting Supervisor analyzes various rate plans utilizing a company's claims history to determine the appropriate rate plan and benefits costs. Must be familiar with regulations at the federal, state and local level. Additionally, Underwriting Supervisor typically requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. Working team member that may validate or coordinate the work of others on a support team. Suggests improvements to process, is a knowledge resource for other team members. Has no authority for staff actions. Generally has a minimum of 2 years experience as an individual contributor.     Job Summary

    Responsible for leading the underwriting and policy service functions for the companies; for maintaining a high quality and profitable book of business with careful and disciplined underwriting: and for product development and pricing. Develops and implements long-term strategy and vision for the underwriting and customer service operations.


    Primary Responsibilities

    • Establishes and maintains an underwriting program for careful and disciplined underwriting in pursuit of consistent profits.
    • Directs the efforts of the underwriting and customer service departments in the pursuit of consistently excellent service.
    • In conjunction with the actuarial team, maintains a disciplined and adequate pricing program for the pursuit of corporate profit and growth objectives.
    • Develops and maintains policy products and coverages.
    • Assists the company President & CEO as needed.
    • Maintains knowledge of industry developments, regulations, and opportunities, effectively communicating these to appropriate employees.
    • Works closely with other members of senior management to develop and maintain policy products and coverages. To include, but not limited to pricing and product development work.
    • Participates in reinsurance programs as needed.
    • Recruits, leads, and motivates a high-quality team committed to the pursuit of corporate goals and objectives.
    • Coordinates with marketing as needed in areas of agency visitation and training, with the understanding that agency management, visitation and marketing activities are an integral part of the underwriting function.
    • Other duties as assigned.


    Knowledge and Skill Requirements

    • College degree required; CPCU designation preferred.
    • In-depth knowledge of the insurance process and products including auto, homeowners, farm owners, and business owners' lines of business.
    • Clear and effective business writing and speaking skills, with the capability of communicating information at an advanced level.
    • Ability to employ industry related metrics for effective management and reporting.
    • Leadership skills.
    • Planning and organizational skills.
    • Some overnight travel

    Working Conditions
    Work is performed in an office environment. May sit for extended periods of time. Visual acuity to perform reading and computer functions. Some travel required. Available for business or civic functions evenings and weekends.
