    Old Republic Surety Company (ORSC) is currently seeking an Assistant Underwriter to join itsCommercial Underwriting Team at its Sioux Falls, SD location. Under the guidance of the branch level manager, the Assistant Underwriter - Commercial performs a variety of administrative duties to support Branch and Home Office Underwriting operations. This position assists in the underwriting of commercial bond submissions and renewals, assists agents and Home Office staff with the web-based bond software applications(s), and assists in soliciting and quoting new business within established guidelines, maintaining agency relationships.


    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Assist in soliciting and quoting new business within guidelines and/or authority. Maintain agency relationships by providing prompt customer service as directed.
    • Send requests for renewal business. Review renewals for completeness and risk acceptability and approve within established guidelines. Present to underwriter when necessary.
    • Promote and demonstrate use of the web-based bond software application(s) with agents.
    • Assist agents and Home Office staff with the web-based bond software application(s).
    • Assist Home Office Underwriting in maintaining existing forms/users in the web-based bond software application(s). Notify Home Office Underwriting of new bond forms needed for the web-based bond software application(s) and process web-based bond software application(s) renewals, as directed. Issue bid/performance bonds and prepare endorsements as needed.
    • Assist Home Office with accounting discrepancies and past due accounts. Review direct bill past due list monthly and contact principal and agent on late pays.
    • Provide Home Office Claims with claim notices along with appropriate bond information and assist with information requests.
    • Perform administrative duties including handling mail, assisting callers, filing, photocopying, faxing, ordering supplies, and using/maintaining office equipment.
    • Other duties as assigned.


    QUALIFICATIONS:

    This position requires a High School diploma, or equivalent, and a minimum of one year related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Working as an Assistant Underwriter requires one to work independently and effectively within a fast-paced environment. Proficiency with Microsoft (MS) Windows and Office products is necessary.Other skills necessary include excellent oral and written communication skills, strong organizational and accurate proofreading skills, the ability to maintain accurate records, the ability to exercise discretion with confidential information, strong attention to detail, and the ability to use a variety of office equipment.

    PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:
    This position requires one to sit for extended periods of time and stand and/or walk occasionally. The position requires one to occasionally push, pull, carry, and/or lift up to 10 pound. No personal protective equipment is required. Ergonomic equipment is available to employees.
