Portfolio Manager Team Leader

  • Washington Trust is seeking a seasoned portfolio manager to serve as the Portfolio Manager Team Leader for our C&I Commercial Banking Group and Private Banking Group. This position will be a key contributor to the implementation of the overall growth plan of the division.   The Portfolio Manager Team Leader will be responsible to personally manage an assigned credit portfolio of C&I clients, which traditional C&I, owner-occupied CRE and some Not-For-Profit credits. The individual will have additional management responsibilities of our Securities Based Lending portfolio and overseeing other portfolio managers in the group managing team development and professional growth to ensure a consistent and thorough underwriting of commercial credit across the division.        Primary Responsibilities:   Provide in-depth, independent analysis of financial statements, management competencies, industry impact, competitive dynamics, collateral, and guarantor support for new/renewal opportunities and other credit reporting deliverables. Make recommendations to the commercial lending team leader and other credit approvers regarding credit amount, structure, and policy compliance. Manage assigned portfolio by proactively monitoring performance and trends, ensuring risk rating integrity, ensuring timely compliance with all reporting, covenants, identifying issues, and following through for remediation, and adhering to compliance and regulatory reviews. Participate or lead the credit portion of client calls for in-depth financial questions, deal information, collection of financial statements, and other portfolio management requirements. Support the end-to-end credit management process including underwriting, structuring, and documenting of loan transactions. Maintain timely renewals of loan maturities for the assigned portfolio and ensure timely completion of annual file updates. Work with the team to develop a relationship plan and client strategy for key customers and loan prospects.  Participate or lead in special projects to aid with the continuous improvement of portfolio management. Participate and lead a long-range framework for C&I and Private Banking Portfolio Management. This will include providing overall direction, recruitment and training of existing and future credit analysts and portfolio managers to enhance the organizations overall credit culture and development of talent in the C&I and Private Banking/Clients area. Report to SVP Commercial Lending (C&I/PCA) and support the EVP, Chief Commercial Lender on a project/as need basis. The Portfolio Manager Team Leader will provide direction to Portfolio Managers and their workflow in conjunction with C&I lenders within the C&I and Private Banking area to support the overall objectives of the group.    Requirements/Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, Business Administration. Formal credit training or comparable analytical background in commercial lending or other analytical experience. At least ten years of experience in commercial underwriting across multiple lines of business, including but not limited to Commercial & Industrial, real estate and not-for-profit. Construction loan underwriting and administration (construction budgets, sources/uses, construction draw administration, property entitlement, lease analysis and property valuation principles) is also desired. Advanced written, mathematical, and analytical skills that demonstrates an ability to analyze balance sheet structure, stress test income and identify cash flow trends. Consistently demonstrates ability to make complex decisions and sound business judgments regarding business and lending activities. Knowledge of financial statement spreading, including proficiency in preparing pro-forma statements. Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills, to include structuring, negotiating, closing, maintenance, modifications, and problem resolution. A strong knowledge of loan documentation requirements. Strong organization skills with the ability to self-manage time and workflow to meet deadlines. Ability to manage multiple tasks at one time. Ability to work independently as well as within a team environment. PC proficiency with Word and Excel, including the use of system and user generated formulas, macros, charts, and tables. Proven track record to self – manage and lead a team of credit analysts/portfolio managers. Ability and recognition in the marketplace to attract, hire, train, mentor and retain Portfolio Managers and Credit Analysts as needed to support the organizations overall commercial credit portfolio needs.
