Transportation Manager manages and coordinates the daily operations of a transportation network including safety, compliance, equipment, and staff. Implements operational policies and procedures to ensure safety and efficiency in all transportation activities. Being a Transportation Manager monitors transportation costs, service level agreements, and performance metrics to identify and resolve problems and achieve efficiencies. Partners with internal and external stakeholders to meet forecasted capacity needs. Additionally, Transportation Manager manages relations with transportation providers to ensure the achievement of required service levels. Requires a bachelor's degree in logistics, transportation, supply chain management, or equivalent. Typically reports to a director. The Transportation Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Transportation Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Description

    RESPONSIBILITIES:        

    1. Plan routes, and make changes when necessary to optimize time/cost and potential growth.
    2. Do weekly payroll for transport drivers and audit pay sheets for accuracy.
    3. Audit and sign for any invoices pertaining to the transportation department.
    4. Set expectations and goals within the limits of the contract for the transport drivers.
    5. Perform weekly safety meetings to increase levels of awareness of the importance of safe operating procedures.
    6. Formulate contractual bids by route and oversee the bidding process to assign drivers to specific routes abiding by the contract.
    7. Hire and terminate employees as needed to keep the department running efficiently.
    8. Train new employees on standards operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices.
    9. Monitor the workforce to ensure that all company rules/policies and regulations are being followed. Enforce progressive discipline and keep accurate employee files.
    10. On a daily basis, audit and turn in driver logs/trip sheets.
    11. In the event of an accident, be prepared to speak with drivers and law enforcement. Also, be able to orchestrate a HAZ MAT clean-up, if necessary.
    12. To minimize overages on lease agreements, monitor the mileage on units and adjust routes.
    13. Ensure proper equipment is available to drivers. Examples of equipment are straps, load bars, plates, salt, etc.
    14. Communicate with salesmen on how to better service our store door customers along with any special instructions, such as delivery times or contact information.
    15. Get rate quotes from outside carriers and determine the best and most competitive pricing to deliver our product.
    16. Maintain relationships with our partners/outside carriers to get the best and most efficient service possible.
    17. Obtain close contact with Ryder, both mechanics and management. Give and receive daily feedback about our equipment. Being proactive with them as a partner to eliminate current/potential problems.
    18. Inspect tractors/trailers weekly to ensure safety and performance are in compliance on all units.
    19. Manage the distribution of our intercompany product based on the needs of other facilities in our network.
    20. Communicate with other members of management to ensure timely product flow.

    Qualifications


    QUALIFICATIONS:          

     

    1. Union experience preferred
    2. Must have CDL A License
    3. Be available (on-call) in PM hours while drivers are on routes for potential problems such as, breakdowns, accidents, customer issues, and any questions.
    4. Must be capable of exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
    5. Must be capable of moving up and down stairways and ladders to perform some job assignments.
    6. Other physical requirements consist of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, bending, twisting, talking and hearing.
    7. Must be able to read, write and speak as well as perform simple arithmetic.
    8. Ability to work efficiently at a fast pace.
    9. Maintain a high state of safety awareness: keep hands out of moving machinery, lift properly, and be alert to movement of materials or other people to give right of way as needed.
