Transportation Director directs, develops, and implements overall operations of a transportation network including safety, compliance, equipment, and staff. Develops and directs operational policies and procedures to ensure safety and efficiency in all transportation activities. Being a Transportation Director monitors transportation costs, service level agreements, and performance metrics to identify and resolve problems and achieve efficiencies. Partners with internal and external stakeholders to forecast and meet capacity needs. Additionally, Transportation Director oversees the acquisition and oversight of transportation providers. Requires a bachelor's degree in logistics, transportation, supply chain management, or equivalent. Typically reports to top management. The Transportation Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Transportation Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     Responsibilities

    The primary purpose of this position is to work with Operations, Site Managers and Route Supervisors to ensure that operation teams are following required DOT regulations and company best practices.  This individual will work closely with both corporate and market area teams to drive transportation compliance.

    • Be proficient in the requirements of the Dept of Transportation and ensure that those policies and programs are being followed.
    • Demonstrates a commitment to communicating, improving, and adhering to safety policies in all work environment areas. Promotes a positive safety culture through leadership by example
    • Interact with all levels of management to communicate site-specific transportation safety programs
    • Investigate any safety concerns, report findings and recommend corrective measures
    • Overall responsibility for oversight of company telematic systems (currently Ltyx and Samsara) to ensure that driver behavior, route supervisor coaching and harsh events are being monitored and addressed.
    • Oversight, review and follow up for roadside inspections and DOT CSA scores
    • Management of the various DOT entities including the filing of Data Q appeals for accident citation as needed.
    • Assist Risk Management department to implement Loss Prevention measures
    • Recommend coaching materials to Operations management as needed
    • Responsible for and manage all regulatory compliance (DOT, BIC, DSNY, NYDEC/ NJDEP, etc.) Serve as a regulatory resource for the market areas.
    • Will have oversight of the safety compliance market team (currently 3 employees)

    Qualifications

    • 3 years of progressive Transportation compliance experience
    • Experience from the sanitation industry is strongly preferred
    • Experience working with government regulations and a thorough knowledge of federal, state and local government transportation regulations (including but not limited to: DOT, OSHA, BIC, DSNY, NYDEC/ NJDEP, etc.)
    • Strong analytical and organizational skills with the ability to adapt to a fast-paced work environment
    • Excellent ability to communicate and lead individuals/teams
    • Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred
