Translator translates written and spoken information from one language to another. Reads, comprehends, and rewrites materials in designated languages following established linguistic rules related to word meanings, sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation. Being a Translator must be well versed in vocabulary dealing with specialty. Must follow ethical procedures and policies that protect the confidentiality of information. Additionally, Translator may require a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Translator gains exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function. Occasionally directed in several aspects of the work. District Bilingual Interpreter/Translator

  • JOB TITLE:  DISTRICT BILINGUAL INTERPRETER / TRANSLATOR
     
    GENERAL STATEMENT
     
    Provides direct assistance to individual school sites and to different district level departments within the Iredell-Statesville School system to facilitate cross-cultural communication for Spanish-speaking students and/or families and staff and personnel of the school system. 
    Work involves oral and written translation from Spanish to English and from English to Spanish. 
     
    REPORTS TO:  Director of ESL/DLI and Bilingual Parent Liaison
     
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
     
    • Associate’s Degree
    • Professional level of Bilingualism, Biliteracy, and Biculturalism
    • Exceptional Communication Skills
    • Cultural competency in North American and Latin American cultures
    • Proficient Computer Skills
    • Ability to work flexible hours
    • Experience working with parents and other individuals, in a school setting (preferred)
    • Valid North Carolina driver’s license
     
     
    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
     
    • Be on call to provide interpreting services at school/office sites as needed.
    • Competent in communicating in both English and Spanish
    • Assist families during school enrollments at the I-SS Welcome Center or at the school or during school Open Houses
    • Ability to accurately translate written materials and interpret verbal exchanges
    • Translate written and interpret oral communications between school personnel and Spanish-speaking students and families.
    • Interpret during parent/teacher, principal, school nurse, social worker, counselor, and/or any school meetings.
    • Be available for home visits with or without school personnel, as needed.
    • Foster trust between parents and the I-SS School Community.
    • Educate Spanish-speaking parents on the district's expectations, rules, and policies.
    • Help parents effectively navigate the educational system.
    • Maintain an open-door policy to fulfill immediate communication needs
     
     
    • Be available by telephone, email, institutional messenger, and office visits to address individual student/parent concerns to reach a more significant number of parents and students.
    • Assists school staff in understanding and appreciating the Hispanic-Latino culture
    • Assist in arranging school conferences between parents and school personnel.
    • Maintain flexible work hours to attend evening school events and meetings.
    • Assist with multi-cultural events offered by Iredell-Statesville Schools.
    • Maintain strict confidentiality in all matters related to Iredell-Statesville Schools.
    • Maintain professional appearance
    • Versed in the use of remote conferencing applications (Google Meet, Zoom, etc.)
     
    ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
     
    • Acquire and maintain knowledge of laws and regulations that affect non-English speaking students and families.
    • Travel between schools in Iredell county on a daily basis
    • Receives training pertinent to the job function.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned by Director of ESL/DLI Departments
     
     
    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
     
    • General knowledge of Google Tools and familiarity with the appropriate software.
    • General knowledge of remote access/video conferencing
    • Ability to demonstrate proper telephone etiquette.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students, parents, and volunteers.
    • Ability to work and maintain professional standards with minimal supervision
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
    • Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing work assignments.
    • Ability to develop and compile a variety of records, reports, and presentations using a variety of technology skills
    • Ability to utilize positive relation skills with staff, students, and parents in fulfilling requests for assistance.
