QUALIFICATIONS:

• High School Diploma (Associates Degree or higher preferred)
• Fluent in speaking, writing and reading Vietnamese and English
• Ability to interact effectively with students, parents/guardians, staff and the community while providing translating services

REPORTS TO: ESOL Coordinator

JOB GOAL: To aid and support the District by correctly communicating and translating information to Vietnamese speaking students, parents, and patrons.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Assist the staff and patrons of the District by translating both written and verbal communication to and from English and Vietnamese.
2. Work as a liaison between the district and non-English speaking families.
3. Provide interpretations as required via phone conferences or in person.
4. Translate documents, memos, and other materials as needed by the District office and schools.
5. Proofread, edit and ensure accuracy of translated materials.
6. Listen to speakers’ statements to determine meanings and prepare translations using electronic listening systems when necessary.
7. Render the message with fidelity and integrity, always adapting and conveying the content in the spirit of the speaker, using language most readily understood by the person(s) whom they are serving.
8. Refer to reference materials as needed to ensure translation accuracy.
9. Attend Professional Development relevant to interpreting skills and establishing a proficient understanding of the educational process.
10. Provide Professional Development/culturally relevant training as needed.
11. Become knowledgeable of District and department policies, procedures and federal and state laws in order to relay that information accurately as needed.
12. Ability to interact effectively with students, parents/guardians, staff and the community while providing translating services.
13. Perform other duties as assigned.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Salary Range:             $25.00/hour
Length of Contract:    As needed
FLSA Status:               Non-exempt
