Training Director directs the design, planning, and implementation of corporate training programs aligned with the objectives and strategy of the company. Collaborates with functional management teams to assess ongoing and future training and development needs as well as effectiveness of established programs. Being a Training Director develops a program delivery schedule that provides training as needed and in locations that work for the participants. Provides engaging communications about program information to encourage participation and highlight the value and benefits of training. Additionally, Training Director approves new training techniques and suggests enhancements to existing training programs. Oversees and establishes relationships with vendors to provide additional outside training programs. Manages and develops training professionals. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to top management. The Training Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be a Training Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function.     General Summary

    The Litigation Supervisor and Training Director will serve as a supervisor of litigation in both capital and non-capital cases. The Litigation Supervisor and Training Director will be a leader within the office and help manage the office alongside the Circuit Public Defender. The Litigation Supervisor and Training Director will serve as lead counsel in several serious felony cases. Also, the Litigation Supervisor and Training Director will serve as a training supervisor for all staff attorneys and will manage case representation within the office.

    Brief Description

    Directs and manages the litigation and case management operations of the Public Defender’s Office. Supervises evaluates and trains staff attorneys. Oversees all operations including case assignments, docket calls, and plea bargains or settlement negotiations. Performs case evaluation, preparation, and management. Represents the client in pre-trial and evidentiary hearings and jury court trials. Ensures effective communication with judges, prosecuting attorneys, court personnel, family members, witnesses, the general public, the media, and other interested parties. Conducts legal research, drafting legal documents, and interpreting laws, rules, and regulations. Work is performed independently with general direction from the Circuit Public Defender.


    Required Licenses or Certifications

      South Carolina Bar License
      Valid Driver’s License

    Minimum Qualifications

      Member of the South Carolina State Bar.
      Is qualified, or eligible to be qualified, as lead counsel in a death penalty case.
      At least five years of relevant experience, defined as follows: representing low-income clients at trial, on appeal, or post-conviction, serving a judicial law clerk or staff attorney; or impact litigation related to civil rights, criminal justice reform, and related fields.
      Has tried at least ten (10) felony cases to verdict.
      Ability to work collaboratively in team settings; strengths in teamwork, client relations, investigation, and relationship building.
      Strong written advocacy skills.

    Preferred Qualifications

      Ten or more years of relevant experience.
      Prior supervisory experience.
      Has tried more than twenty (20) felony cases to verdict.
      Prior experience training on topics such as factual investigation, post-conviction litigation, and forensic science.
      Prior experience litigating forensic science-related issues.
      Experience with and the ability to understand, summarize and translate complex research for a lay audience.
      Demonstrated commitment to social justice, indigent defense, and criminal justice reform.
      Ability to work with a diverse range of people.
