We are searching for a Labor Relations Manager located at our Montpelier, OH facility. This positions is responsible for the overall management of the labor relations programs across multiple sites in OH and MI. The position requires hands on experience in union environments, in leading contract negotiations, conflict resolution, positive employee relations and grievance handling.
Labor Relations Manager Responsibilities:
- Administers and manages administration of labor contracts; provides interpretation of labor contracts to managers, employees and HR staff; oversees processes for review and resolution of employee grievances.
- Collaborates with human resources business partners and managers on labor matters and helps to develop the appropriate course of action.
- In partnership with the Director of Labor Relations and business unit leadership, serves as subject matter expert in contract negotiations with recognized employee organizations.
- Partners with local management and HR Manager to lead effective and efficient labor contract preparation and negotiations for multiple business units and unions.
- Maintains current knowledge of employee and labor relations trends, legal decisions, and statutory changes; conducts research necessary to support contract negotiations and employee relations. Uses appropriate negotiation strategies to develop bargaining goals and negotiate contracts consistent with the Company’s goals.
- Facilitates on-going communication and working relationships with employee representative organizations including coordination of joint labor-management committees.
- Collaborates with HR Manager regarding recommendations to the policies and procedures concerning employee relations and personnel practices.
- Manages the process to investigate and respond to complaints from the Bureau of Labor or other agencies.
- May represent the Company in arbitrations and hearings related to unfair labor practice complaints.
- Partners with the Manager of Learning and Development to develop and deliver management training programs designed to advance the people management skills of the Company’s management staff in support of positive employee relations.
- Establishes and maintains a constructive and collaborative relationship with business agents and/or representatives of recognized labor organizations that result in support and alignment with operational priorities.
- In coordination with supervisors, managers and directors, provides guidance on and reviews responses to grievances filed by employees and/or labor representatives. Tracks, monitors and documents all grievances. Identifies trends and develops effective strategies to reduce grievances and disputes.
- In collaboration with HR Manager, reviews, monitors and ensures consistency of employee corrective action and seeks appropriate review as needed. Assists in the preparation of employee corrective action documents.
- Anticipates and advises Management and Human Resources Manager of the impact strategic or operational decisions will have upon employee and labor relations and makes recommendations that avoid and/or minimize labor disputes.
- Identifies training opportunities, develops training materials, and collaborates with Supervisors, Human Resources and training committee members to effectively manage job safety work practices.
Responsibilities
- Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business, labor relations, or related field; Advanced degree, JD, or other specialized training in labor/employee relations a significant plus
- 7 years of direct experience in employee relations, labor relations in a union manufacturing environment
- Team player with strong written and oral communication skills
- Strong interpersonal and persuasion skills with the ability to establish partnerships with senior leaders and across organizational lines
- Able to handle confidential information in a mature and professional manner
- Highly analytical thinker and problem solver
- Proven attention to detail; extremely organized
- Acts with sense of urgency, bias for action, fast pace, and desire to thrive in a dynamically growing environment
- High-quality judgment and sound decision-making in a fair and consistent manner
- Strong project and time management skills with ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects to closure
- Ability to travel up to 20% domestically
