Toxicologist develops and coordinates regulatory programs for consumer products. Conducts research on toxic effects of consumer products and ingredients on laboratory animals for manufacturers of consumer products. Being a Toxicologist may require a Ph. D in toxicology or its equivalent and 2-4 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Additionally, Toxicologist is familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.   • Position Objective: Provide services as a Toxicologist in support of the overall functions of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The purpose of this position is to provide toxicological support for literature-based cancer hazard evaluations for possible listing in the Report on Carcinogens. The incumbent should have experience/expertise in toxicology, cancer biology and mechanisms, environmental health science, and systematic review. Knowledge of computational biology is preferred.

     

     

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Advance the science through proposing and investigating new target projects for initiation based on novelty and relevance to human health.
    • Serves as co-lead of literature cancer evaluation teams for at least one project. 5
    • Work with staff on the interpretation of experiments performed by research scientists. 4
    • Provide advice and assistance to users in designing experiments, using instrumentation, data acquisition and analysis, and preparing figures for publication. 3
    • Submit and gain approval of laboratory animal study protocols. 2
    • Write technical reports and prepare manuscripts.
    • Oversee project data quality; analyze and interpret project data.
    • Conduct systematic review of cancer animal and mechanistic studies, including evaluating study quality and evidence integration.
    • Work with staff to confirm assay results and evaluate new techniques and instruments; search literature; propose, design and test alternative assays for difficult screening targets; confirm assay results; develop secondary assays. 1
    • Prepare oral presentations and posters for internal and external groups/conferences.
    • Co-author manuscripts on research projects; publish in peer-reviewed journals. Review, edit, and, as needed, write first drafts of papers, posters and manuscripts.
    • Present results of clinical and experimental research at recognized scientific meetings by lectures and exhibits (poster sessions).
    • Search existing literature for new and/or relevant techniques.
    • Produce research reports and regularly communicate results to staff and collaborators.
    • Prepare information for and attend advisory, review committee and panel meetings; respond to issues and concerns about specific applications/proposal pertaining to assigned program area.
    • Provide scientific and technical expertise to all visiting fellows, post-docs, and technicians.
    • Study quality evaluations of animal and mechanistic studies - Quarterly
    • Draft reports (or subsections of reports) - Quarterly
    • Critical review of reports - Quarterly

     

    Basic Qualifications:

    • Master’s degree in biology or a related field.
    • DABT certification.
    • Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Knowledge of systematic review, toxicology, cancer biology/carcinogenesis, computational biology/read across, animal cancer studies, manuscript writing, and data presentation.

     

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Ability to multi-task and pay close attention to detail.
    • Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.
    • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
