Youth + Family Services Specialist

  • The Dempsey Center is seeking clinical professionals (LCSW, LMSW-CC, LCPC, LCPC-c, LMFT or CCLS) to work in support of its Youth and Family Services (YFS) program. A primary location at one of our Center offices (Lewiston or South Portland) would be required, with flexibility to travel to our other location 2-3x/month for programming and consult needs. All services at the Center are provided at no cost to our clients (we do not bill clients for services).

    These positions would work in a per diem capacity.

    The pay rate range of $25-$50/hour is dependent on clinical licensing and experience.

    The ideal individuals will have experience supporting both youth (minors, primarily school aged and older, 5-17 years of age) and parents/guardians, including the collective family unit. Further experience with psychosocial clinical support for those with a chronic condition impact, particularly cancer, is ideal. The majority of our families in this program have a parent/guardian/grandparent with the diagnosis of cancer, but some youth clients do come to us as the individual being treated for cancer.

    The Youth & Family Services Specialist will support youth and families impacted by cancer via a psychoeducational consultation model This support includes:

    Parent/Guardian intakes (conducted via phone, virtual meeting space, or in person).

    30-45 minute intake includes assessment of familial, youth, and parental needs in the context of cancer impact, with a focus on identifying resources and referrals best suited for the client/family. The intake includes one or more parents/guardians and are starting points for a full family consult.

    Parent/Guardian Family Consults (conducted in person or via virtual meeting).

    60-90 minute consults include working with family unit to address immediate needs, provide information, guidance, and support as it relates to supporting children’s development and wellbeing in the context of cancer impact. Consults would include parents/guardians, youth, and potentially other family members.

    Additional Essential Duties:
    Support youth and families impacted by cancer via group-based educational and psychosocial support programs. To include social groups such as family nights and clinical groups such as support groups for different YFS populations.

    Collaborate with the Dempsey Center counseling team and other service line leaders.

    Assist in leading, in partnership with the counseling leadership team, and planning Space 2 Breathe, the Dempsey Center’s therapeutic summer camp for teens.

    Space to Breathe is an adventure-based overnight program for teens ages 12-17 (entering 6th grade-12th grade) impacted by a parent, caregiver, or sibling’s cancer. The program gives teens a chance to challenge themselves and build resiliency while forging strong bonds with other teens who “get it” due to their shared experiences with cancer. It is facilitated by clinical counselors, Dempsey Center staff, trained volunteers, and professional wilderness guides. This role, depending on length of assignment, may end up participating in the program as a facilitator.

    Advocates for the needs of youth and family clients impacted by cancer in accordance with the mission and values of the Dempsey Center.

    Manages the documentation process for counseling services.

    Utilizes best practice and established standards in assessing clients’ psychosocial status and needs.

    Updates approach with clients as needed based on client’s response to intervention and services.

    Supports the physical, spiritual, and emotional needs of individuals living with or impacted by cancer.

    Recognizes professional boundaries and scope of practice and makes appropriate referrals as needed.

    Communicates appropriately and clearly to members of the client’s health care team, when appropriate.

    Functions independently, with supervision from the Director of Counseling Services.

    Maintains compliance with HIPAA policies and procedures.

    Participates in interdisciplinary meetings and peer review.

    Meets productivity standards and keeps on schedule with client treatments.

    Meets department documentation standards.
