    Job Description
    The Office of Research Development is a unit of the Office of Research. The Office of Research is the central hub for research support at Syracuse University, facilitating excellence in research, scholarship, innovation, and creative activity that addresses emerging opportunities and societal needs. This support extends to faculty, staff, students, and external partners. Designated as a Research 1 institution, Syracuse University was awarded a total of $106.8 million of sponsored funding in fiscal year 2022.The Office of Research Development (ORD) supports campus-wide programs for fostering faculty research development and new interdisciplinary research initiatives. ORD works closely with other Office of Research Units: the Office of Sponsored Programs; the Office of Research Integrity and Protections; the Office of Technology Transfer; and the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs. ORD also coordinates with other institutional units that support sponsored funding, such as the Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations, interdisciplinary research centers, and the Deans Offices of each School and College at Syracuse University.

    The Research Development Specialist will advance the research mission of Syracuse University by assisting the Office of Research Development staff with faculty development efforts and in the development of new sponsored funding proposals. The Specialist will also provide project management support to assist with Office of Research Development functions.

    The Research Development Specialist will work with Office of Research Development staff to support externally sponsored proposals and to aid faculty in identifying and pursuing funding opportunities. Major activities include: assisting in the development of external proposal applications; assisting with grant development training; and facilitating collaboration between faculty and relevant institutional offices that support research development. The Research Development Specialist will manage limited submission opportunities which require an internal competition and institutional peer review. The Research Development Specialist will also aid in the management of internal funding programs to enhance faculty capacity for sponsored funding proposals. The Research Development Specialist will provide project management support for the design and delivery of educational workshops, events, and trainings for faculty and research staff.

    Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred.
    • Three (3 ) plus years of directly related, progressively responsible experience in research development or contracts and grants job function, a background in project management, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

    • Independent judgment and strong organization and communication skills and superior customer service focus across broad and diverse subject areas.
    • Ability to manage multiple tasks concomitantly.
    • Ability to work under pressure and to meet internal and external, set deadlines.
    • Ability to facilitate trainings and events in an academic setting.
    • Research development experience, editing, and writing for science and grants, are all highly desirable.

    Responsibilities
    • Assist ORD staff with proposal preparation, pre-submission reviews, and submission coordination for proposals. Provide project management support for documents and processes to support the proposal development. Perform careful edits of proposals to enhance the communication of ideas. Support ORD staff in the development of non-technical supplementary materials. Streamline processes to support the research development infrastructure. Develop intermediate-level knowledge of applicable sponsor and institutional regulations, policies, and guidelines.
    • Assist with planning, outreach, and management of reviews for campus limited submission opportunities. Set up internal competitions (managing the process through SU’s electronic application system InfoReady), including the coordination of review teams, for externally sponsored funding opportunities with limits on institutional submission, and subsequent proposal submission assistance for selected applicants.
    • In conjunction with units across campus and the ORD staff, provide project management support for the design and delivery of educational workshops, events, and trainings for faculty and research staff. Trainings will seek to refine proposal-writing, broader impact development, funding searches, and other research development skills. Coordinates and/or assists with other activities, surveys, special projects, and reports.
    • Assist with the management of intramural grant programs from the Office of Research Development.
    • Other duties as assigned.
