The key duties of this position are a vital link to efficient, well–organized operations on the patient care units. As a valued member of the healthcare team, this individual must effectively communicate with all personnel throughout the organization as well as patients and visitors. This position must be able to demonstrate flexibility by adjusting to changes in the volume of patients per unit. Will be required to assume additional clerical or patient care duties for assigned nursing areas on each shift. Will also demonstrate competency when performing in the role of a nursing assistant. Must assist professional nursing personnel with routine duties by performing basic patient care procedures. Takes vital signs, assists patients with personal hygiene, feeds and ambulates patients, and performs other functions according to specific procedures. Often one of the first to meet patient and patient's family; must be skilled in communication and public relations. Performs physically, mentally and emotionally demanding work. Works with sick and dying patients, infectious disease, hazardous materials, fluids and hazardous chemicals. Will accept and follow direction from the immediate nurse in charge.
The Nurse Extern is responsible for providing professional nursing care under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse for assigned patients. The Nurse Extern assists the Registered Staff Nurse in collecting, implementing, reporting, and documenting patient data. The Nurse Extern assists with the reinforcement of patient education and the preparation for patient discharge. The Nurse Extern is a contributing member of the multidisciplinary Health Care Team and must be able to communicate the needs of the Patient/Significant others to all disciplines involved in the patient's hospitalization. Nurse Extern includes a student who is enrolled in an accredited nursing program that has completed, at minimum, a fundamental of nursing course.
