Executive Director of Professional Learning

  • The Providence Public School District (PPSD) serves approximately 22,000 students (about the seating capacity of Madison Square Garden) attending our 37 schools. PPSD employs more than 3,200 professionals who work in and provide support to our schools, which include 20 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, 11 high schools, and 2 public district charter schools. Of our employees, about 2,000 are educators, and over 600 others directly support our schools' students and families.


    Our schools are diverse learning communities. Approximately 68% of our students are Latinx, 15% Black, 7% White, 4% Asian, 5.5% Multi-racial and 1% Native American. Approximately 40% of students are multilingual, and about 16% receive special education services. Approximately 55% of students come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken. Our students and families speak more than 55 languages and hail from 91 countries of origin.


    Primary responsibilities are to support schools and lead a comprehensive vision for teaching and learning that drives the district’s commitment to equity and excellence in education.? Provide district-wide leadership to schools and other departments in implementing a learning system that elevates standards-based education aligned to the Rhode Island Professional Learning Standards. Assess needs and design, deliver, direct, and evaluate district professional learning. Design, evaluate, and direct instructional coaching services provided to each building. Lead efforts to improve staff efficacy and student learning by aligning strategic priorities and initiatives. Responsible for leading and collaborating with other executive directors and divisions on the professional learning and leadership development of educators, teacher assistants, and leaders.? Supervise and monitor the assigned learning services staff to ensure coherence among and monitor the impact of school-based staff that support instructional capacity building. Reports to the Chief of Curriculum and Instruction.

    RIDE Requirements:

    • Rhode Island District Level Administrator Certificate – Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment and/or Building Level Administrator and the following: 

    • RI Content Certification

    • Right to Read Proficiency Level within one year of hire
    • Master’s degree in education, curriculum or school leadership plus additional coursework required for certification or licensure

    • Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in teaching and administration

    • Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a school administrator



    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements below represent the required knowledge, skill, and/or ability. 


    • Assess needs and design, deliver, and evaluate professional learning that aligns with district goals for all staff members. This includes elementary and secondary professional learning systems for teachers, principals, coaches, and school instructional leadership teams.

    • Collaborate with departments in developing and implementing professional learning opportunities. 

    • Foster a culture that scales and sustains effective teaching and leadership.? 

    • Provide assistance and direction to all elementary and secondary schools in implementing a guaranteed and viable curriculum, including, but not limited to, all content and elective areas, to ensure educational equity.??

    • Direct, evaluate, and coordinate the assigned learning services departments' strategic planning and ongoing work.

    • In collaboration with building administrators, hire, train, and evaluate instructional coaches at the elementary and secondary levels to increase student achievement and teacher efficacy at each school.?

    • Develop, administer, monitor, and initiate requisitions for the district professional learning budget and direct monies for professional learning aligned to district goals.

    • In collaboration with other school executive directors and Human Resource leaders, support an induction and ongoing professional development program for newly hired and early-career building administrators. In collaboration with other school executive directors, assess the needs and develop aligned professional learning and support for veteran building administrators.

    • Collaborate with Human Resources on the district’s induction program for certified educators.

    • Assist building administrators in developing effective, culturally affirming school and classroom instructional practices with the learning services team.

    • Collaborate with Office of Student Populations, Office of Multilingual Learners, School Redesign, and School Improvement to coordinate professional learning in service of accelerating student engagement and achievement.

    • Maintain and deepen current educational learning on an ongoing basis.

    • Communicate and problem-solve with executive directors, leaders, building administrators, and educators.

    • Strategically collaborate with Transformation Officers and school Principals to align professional learning initiatives with school performance and student achievement goals.

    • Conduct regular visits to school sites to observe professional learning in action, providing actionable feedback to educators and instructional coaches to enhance the effectiveness of teaching and leadership practices.

    • Leverage data analytics to identify professional learning needs, evaluate program effectiveness, and drive continuous improvement in instructional practices district wide.

    • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to navigate and facilitate difficult conversations with sensitivity and professionalism.

    • Lead the District Professional Learning Team.

    • Effective in reporting progress, challenges, and strategic insights up to the Chief of Curriculum and Instruction and down to school-based staff, ensuring transparency and strategic alignment.

    • Achievement Focus: Sets challenging goals, demonstrates persistence, and overcomes obstacles to achieve goals.

    • Equity: Exhibits a commitment to equity and creates a sense of urgency to close achievement gaps.

    • Uphold and apply state laws, contractual obligations, and district policies while ensuring due process.

    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Academic Officer.


    • Experience at the elementary or secondary level

    • Experience with teaching adults preferred

    • ESL preferred

    • In-depth knowledge of elementary or secondary curriculum
