The News & Government Affairs Producer plays a key role in supporting GNAT-TV’s mission to connect community and empower people through local independent media. The News & Government Affairs Producer is responsible for outreach, planning, development, and production of Local News & Government Affairs coverage for GNAT-TV. Tasks include content development and procurement, reporting, video production and editing, outreach and training for the GNAT-TV News Project.
Essential Functions:
Content / News Gathering / Video Production
- Produces local news programming: research, plans, produces segments; procures content, writes scripts, hosts, reports, and edits; including newscasts, stories, and segments, and in-depth interviews / discussions using video, audio and text.
- Works closely with the production, programming, and marketing teams to ensure news content (video, audio/podcast) is distributed to cable, website, social media and other outlets.
- Works closely with the production, programming and marketing teams to produce live coverage.
- Aggregates news and event information from other news outlets and sources.
- Provides leadership and strategy for high quality local news coverage that meets the information needs of our communities, facilitates civic engagement and grows local audience.
- Oversees editorial, ethical, artistic, technical and journalistic standards to ensure GNAT-TV's branding and programming initiatives are met.
- Develops editorial priorities and news coverage policies consistent with GNAT-TV's mission.
Outreach & Community Building
- Build partnerships with strategic organizations, government agencies, and individuals to develop local issues-based content and ensure access to local information.
- Produces content that elevates facilitates civic engagement and provides a platform for local voices and perspectives.
- Identify and cultivate relevant relationships to increase awareness of GNAT-TV, grow its viewership, volunteer base, supporting membership, corporate underwriting program and community participation.
- Represents the organization and promotes The News Project on social media and at community events.Other Duties As Needed:
Training
- Works with management and production teams to develop a network of community reporters / digital journalists to cover topics of interest and importance to our communities. Develop training curriculum and conduct classes on journalism, storytelling and other digital media techniques.
- Supervises and mentors volunteer community members, student contributors and segment Producers.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Video Production, Broadcasting, Multimedia Communications helpful but not required. Equivalent professional experience in multimedia journalism environment including television and video production, video editing, on camera presentation and interviewing experience.
- Ability to use various computer and media production software and hardware including: Mac and Windows OS, Microsoft Office, Google Suite, social media platforms and other digital tools, apps, video and audio production systems including Final Cut Pro X or Adobe Creative Suite.
- Detail oriented with outstanding ability to speak, write and communicate skillfully and persuasively.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse range of community organizations, groups, individuals, ideas and opinions; a commitment to diversity and fairness.
- Knowledge of and interest in events, activities and issues of local and regional importance. Including local and regional government affairs.
- Ability to receive feedback and work in a dynamic changing environment.
- Lift video production equipment regularly.
- Strong commitment to deadlines and deliverables and ability to time manage accordingly and achieve objectives within the approved budget.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Environment / Working Conditions
- The environment is oriented to public service and subject to frequent work interruptions. Employees may work with continual public and internal contact while adhering to tight timelines. Work at the studio and on location in and around our service territory towns required.
