    Yu Ming Charter School is a non-profit, tuition-free network of public schools located in Oakland and San Leandro and open to all residents of California. As a leader in Mandarin Immersion education, our mission is to nurture our inclusive and diverse community to become empowered, engaged, and outstanding global citizens. We currently serve 800 students  across three campuses, and continue to grow our enrollment each year.     POSITION OVERVIEW

    We are seeking a dedicated teacher proficient in Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and adept in Diversity Studies to join our team. This teacher will be responsible for fostering the social and emotional development of middle school students within a supportive and nurturing learning environment. This teacher will guide students in exploring the complex intersections of social identities, encompassing race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, religion, and ability. Through this exploration, the aim is to cultivate empathy, critical thinking, and social awareness, as well as promote cultural and diversity awareness among students.


    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Deliver SEL lessons effectively to students, using a variety of teaching strategies to engage learners and accommodate diverse learning styles
    • Facilitate group discussions, role-playing activities, and experiential learning opportunities that promote social-emotional growth and skill development
    • Implement the  Compass Model including facilitating Compass Circles and Badge Work
    • Implement comprehensive diversity curriculum that explores various dimensions of diversity 
    • Deliver engaging lessons and activities that encourage critical thinking, empathy, and cultural competence among students
    • Provide opportunities for students to explore their own identities and engage in respectful dialogue about issues of equity and social justice
    • Organize events, workshops, and guest speakers to raise awareness and facilitate dialogue around diversity-related topics
    • Create a safe, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment where students feel valued, respected, and connected
    • Establish and maintain clear expectations for behavior and interpersonal interactions, modeling positive social-emotional skills and attitudes
    • Actively participate in professional development activities including engaging in training with school leaders and coaches to benefit from targeted feedback on instruction
    • Collaborate with colleagues to leverage collective expertise and resources to create a positive, inclusive, and effective learning environment for student 
    • Identify unique student needs and collaborate with team members to effectively address those needs
    • Maintain a high-level of professionalism including meeting deadlines and commitments to self and the community
    • Communicate regularly with students and their families about classroom activities and student progress
    • Perform other related duties as required and assigned


    QUALIFICATIONS

    Required

    • Bachelor’s degree
    • Single subject California Teaching Credential or a Multiple-subject teaching credential or enrollment in a Teaching Intern Program and eligible for an Intern Teaching Credential
    • Experience working with middle school students 
    • Familiarity with restorative practices
    • Superb interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of students, colleagues and families
    • Flexibility and adaptability to change; ability to work in a dynamic, creative learning environment
    • Driven adult learner dedicated to his or her own professional growth, including learning new and innovative teaching practices

     

    TIME COMMITMENT

    185-day school year, 7 student-free professional development days for collaboration with colleagues. Common building hours are 8:00am-4:00pm.


    SALARY AND BENEFITS

    Yu Ming offers a generous salary and benefits package which includes: 

    • Placement on the Yu Ming Charter School Salary Table based on years of experience and highest degree earned, with up to 12 years of experience recognized
    • An additional $5000 stipend for National Board Certification
    • 100% of Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance covered by the school (depending on the selected plan and if at least 0.75 FTE)
    • Free Access to an Employee Assistance Program offering a variety of services including counseling and legal aid
    • Participation in CalStrs Retirement System
    • 11 Sick days per full time employee per school year
