Department Summary / Preferences:
The BCBSM Pharmacy Services Clinical Intern - Emerging Therapies & Health Outcomes will have the opportunity to work
on a variety of projects relating to the practice of managed care pharmacy. Projects will include working on day-to-day
pharmacy benefit administration issues, clinical pharmacy operations, pharmacy communication, utilization management,
and regulatory issues. Projects and assignments support pipeline monitoring of drugs seeking FDA approval and
drug trends, outcomes research and quality measures related to antibiotics, COPD, asthma, diabetes, statin therapy,
medication adherence and opioids. The intern will also be involved in the development of educational and marketing
materials geared towards prescribers and patients on pharmacy hot topics. Participation in multidisciplinary
workgroups which may include behavioral health, case management and provider affairs will assist in developing a
comprehensive approach in disease management. The internship will allow the intern to apply the skills and knowledge
acquired from pharmacy school to a managed care pharmacy practice environment, while enhancing their therapeutic
knowledge, communication, and analytical skills.
Responsibilities
- Analyze literature, guidelines and claims data for the pipeline of drugs seeking FDA approval
- Complete projects/assignments that are outcomes research focused, which may include assisting in the review of
articles being considered for publication, review of abstracts being considered for presentation at a national conference,
developing a research poster and serving as co-author
- Identify opportunities to collaborate with prescribers and members to improve health outcomes related to antibiotics,
COPD, asthma, diabetes, statin therapy, medication adherence and opioids
- Assist in developing clinical rationale for medication use policies and/or utilization management tools for a particular drug
or class of drugs
- Serve as a clinical liaison and develop educational and marketing materials geared towards prescribers and patients on pharmacy hot topics
- Analyze pharmacy claims to identify processing issues or patterns of utilization
- Research drug information questions
Required & Preferred Skills
Required
- Current 2nd year student in PharmD program at an accredited College of Pharmacy
- Strong pharmacy & therapeutics knowledge
- Strong analytical skills and interest in working with large datasets
- Interest in practicing pharmacy in a managed care environment
Preferred
- Previous work experience in a pharmacy practice setting is preferred.
