Position Summary
Works under minimal supervision while designing many types of metal stamping dies including coining, fineblank, and progressive dies, as well as designing any other tooling, prototype tooling, fixturing, or gaging needed to support business objectives, all while using proven Engineering and Tool and Die processes. Provides manufacturability feedback to cross-functional teams. Supports and mentors other Tool and Die team members and department Engineering staff. Supports the Tool & Die CI team with business objectives and goals related to Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost, and Growth (SQDC&G).
Essential Functions
- Understand the LTG Die Design Guidelines and apply them where necessary.
- Use Solidworks CAD software to design metal stamping dies including coining, fineblank, and progressive dies, as well as designing any other tooling, prototype tooling, fixturing, or gaging required.
- Generate strip layouts and die design planning based on customer supplied part drawings.
- Generate surfaces and other geometry as required to complete or modify die designs.
- Initiate die design review stages starting with strip layout and ending at final review of die design.
- Provide technical input on manufacturability, manufacturing process requirements, strip layout, part development, die design, and component inspection processes.
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with cross-functional areas to ensure new dies, along with existing die modifications, are introduced in an effective manner.
- Analyze statistical data and use it to update existing die designs, focusing on optimizing output, quality, and process capability.
- Generate and/or update Drawings and BOMs to support die modifications or new die designs.
- Provides support and guidance to other Die Design team members.
- Maintains record keeping of controlled documents and their changes while following current processes.
Additional Functions
- May provide peer reviews of strip layouts and die designs before official review stages.
- Provide support to any aspect of the Tool & Die Shop as needed.
- Provide CAD support to all departments within LTG as needed.

Education and/or Experience
- Tool & Die Apprenticeship/Journeyman status
- Demonstrated Die Design experience required, typically between 5 and 10 years.
- Demonstrated strip layout and die planning required.
- Knowledge of machine shop equipment, wire edm, and cnc programming required.
- GD&T proficiency, blueprint reading skills, and high level of understanding of product manufacturing tolerances required.
- Intermediate to advanced CAD skills required. Experience with Solidworks preferred.
- Excellent skills in interpersonal relationships, communication, and teamwork.
- Possess strong written and oral communication skills.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently stands and walks; talks and hears, uses hands to finger, handle, grasp, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms. The employee occasionally sits; climbs; twists, stoops, kneels, crouches, or crawls.
The employee frequently lifts and/or moves up to 5 lbs., and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 55 lbs. The employee frequently pushes/pulls an average of 40 lbs, and occasionally pushes/pulls up to 70 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
Working Conditions/Physical Hazards
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in an office environment as well as production environment with exposure to noise, liquid grinding coolant mist and vapor, dust and lubricants managed through an exhaust system. Work area is well lit and air conditioned.
