Tool, Die, and Gauge Making Supervisor oversees skilled workers responsible for constructing, maintaining, modifying, and calibrating machine shop tools, dies, prototypes, jigs, fixtures and molds. Supervises the set up and operation of various lathes, grinders, milling, and boring machines used to produce tools. Being a Tool, Die, and Gauge Making Supervisor completes high level tool development work. Ensures jobs are completed correctly and on time. Additionally, Tool, Die, and Gauge Making Supervisor may require an associate degree. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. Working team member that may validate or coordinate the work of others on a support team. Suggests improvements to process, is a knowledge resource for other team members. - Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, or computer-aided design (CAD) files to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpieces
- Set up and operate conventional or computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders to cut, bore, grind, or otherwise shape parts to prescribed dimensions and finishes
- Verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts for conformance to specifications using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, gauge blocks, dial indicators, and optical comparators
- Fit and assemble parts to make, repair, or modify dies, jigs, gauges, and tools using machine tools and hand tools
- Inspect finished dies for smoothness, contour conformity, and defects
- Test the performance of completed tools or dies to ensure that they meet specifications
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Completion of a formal apprenticeship program or technical school training in tool and die making
- Proficiency in reading blueprints and interpreting technical drawings
- Strong knowledge of CAD software such as SolidWorks
- Experience with micrometers and other precision measuring instruments
- Familiarity with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)
- Ability to use hand tools and operate machinery such as lathes, stamping presses, and electrical discharge machines (EDM)
- Knowledge of plastics injection molding processes is a plus
