Tool, Die, and Gauge Making Supervisor oversees skilled workers responsible for constructing, maintaining, modifying, and calibrating machine shop tools, dies, prototypes, jigs, fixtures and molds. Supervises the set up and operation of various lathes, grinders, milling, and boring machines used to produce tools. Being a Tool, Die, and Gauge Making Supervisor completes high level tool development work. Ensures jobs are completed correctly and on time. Additionally, Tool, Die, and Gauge Making Supervisor may require an associate degree. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. Working team member that may validate or coordinate the work of others on a support team. Suggests improvements to process, is a knowledge resource for other team members.     Available Shift:

    • 2nd Shift 2:30 pm - 10:30 pm
    • 3rd Shift 10:30 pm - 6:30 am

    Overtime: Candidates must be available to work Overtime and weekends as needed. Overtime is paid 1.5 and double on Sundays

    Starting Pay: Pay will differ depending of Level of Experience. Pay range starts at $25.29 - $32.78 plus $1.00 differential for working 2nd or 3rd Shift

    Responsibilities:

    • Build and maintain large automotive tooling dies and fixtures for automotive parts production, incl. specifically Hot Stamp prototype and production tooling.
    • Ability to analyze parts on checking fixture, setup laser cutting and achieve laser First Off.
    • Give input/ideas to Engineering Department on tooling/design alternatives for unique or difficult jobs.
    • Ability to work and experience working with 800 ton to 3,000 ton mechanical and hydraulic presses.
    • Ability to read/interpret blueprints & designs accurately.
    • Maintain and operate lathe, manual milling machines, surface grinders and hand grinders accurately and efficiently.
    • Welding and ability to execute manual form/trim changes
    • Troubleshoot and repair existing tools as required.
    • Utilize blue prints and/or Smirt Die Design for correct detailing, lay out and set up.
    • Provide continuous guidance to Tool & Die Apprentices as assigned.
    • Work together with fellow employees & personnel of other departments.
    • Ensure production readiness of all dies, by following the preventative maintenance schedule, die service procedure, and spare parts system requirements.

    Qualification:

    • Recognized Certificate of Qualification as Tool & Die Maker.
    • 2 years minimum of Tool & Die Maker experience or Journeyman with completed Apprenticeship
    • Minimum of 5 years experience in a Tool and Die Maker role (not Machinist) without Journeyman required in manufacturing of automotive tooling & dies, i.e. or Hot Stamping dies tools
    • Ability to read tool and die designs and prints
    • Ability to use precise measuring equipment
    • Ability to read, write, and speak English
    • Ability to communicate well with others
    • Ability to work overtime

    Equipment/Tools

    • Tool room machinery including: lathes, milling machine, surface grinders, drill press, saws; hand tools; overhead crane; forklift;
    • Precision measurement tools

    Working Conditions

    • Ability to move throughout the plant
    • Extended sitting and standing; reaching and bending.
    • Occasional lifting of up to 40 lbs. may be required
    • Loud work environment; compliance with personal protective equipment as required
    • Ability to manually operate tool room machinery
    • Ability to access tooling both in and out of machines to troubleshoot problems

    - Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, or computer-aided design (CAD) files to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpieces
    - Set up and operate conventional or computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders to cut, bore, grind, or otherwise shape parts to prescribed dimensions and finishes
    - Verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts for conformance to specifications using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, gauge blocks, dial indicators, and optical comparators
    - Fit and assemble parts to make, repair, or modify dies, jigs, gauges, and tools using machine tools and hand tools
    - Inspect finished dies for smoothness, contour conformity, and defects
    - Test the performance of completed tools or dies to ensure that they meet specifications

    Qualifications:
    - High school diploma or equivalent
    - Completion of a formal apprenticeship program or technical school training in tool and die making
    - Proficiency in reading blueprints and interpreting technical drawings
    - Strong knowledge of CAD software such as SolidWorks
    - Experience with micrometers and other precision measuring instruments
    - Familiarity with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)
    - Ability to use hand tools and operate machinery such as lathes, stamping presses, and electrical discharge machines (EDM)
    - Knowledge of plastics injection molding processes is a plus
