Tool, Die, and Gauge Making Supervisor oversees skilled workers responsible for constructing, maintaining, modifying, and calibrating machine shop tools, dies, prototypes, jigs, fixtures and molds. Supervises the set up and operation of various lathes, grinders, milling, and boring machines used to produce tools. Being a Tool, Die, and Gauge Making Supervisor completes high level tool development work. Ensures jobs are completed correctly and on time. Additionally, Tool, Die, and Gauge Making Supervisor may require an associate degree. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. Working team member that may validate or coordinate the work of others on a support team. Suggests improvements to process, is a knowledge resource for other team members. Tool and Die Maker
Duties:
- 1. The Die Maker is responsible for preventive maintenance and repair of stamping dies, progressive stamping dies and other support equipment.
2. Job tasks include, training of apprentices in a four year program with a progression of duties and responsibilities over time.
3. Ability to read prints and use measuring tools
4. Machining details using Manual Mills, Lathes, Surface Grinders, Drill Presses, and Saws
5. Basic knowledge of 2 and 3 Axis CNC mills
6. Welding (TIG, MIG, & ARC), Basic knowledge of Heat Treating, Nitrogen Spring rebuilding
7. Understanding of Die Set-ups on Presses (Tandem line and blanking)
8. Ability to trouble-shoot and repair stamping dies and progressive stamping dies when break down occurs during production run.
9. Occasional heavy lifting (up to 60 pounds) but most lifting is less than 10 pounds.
10. May work in awkward positions with overhead reaching when assisting with repair work inside of presses
11. Shift is 8 hours. May work overtime on Saturdays or Sundays. Two 10-minute breaks/shift and 20 minute meal break.
12. Requires crane operator certification
13. Requires Fork truck operation and certification
Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Tool and Die Maker or similar role
- Proficient in reading blueprints, CAD drawings, and specifications
- Strong knowledge of tooling materials, machining techniques, and heat treatment processes
- Experience operating stamping presses and other related machinery
- Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to identify issues and implement effective solutions
- Strong attention to detail and precision in tool fabrication and repair
