Tool Design Engineering Manager manages the design and development of tools and machinery to facilitate and optimize manufacturing processes. Leads design reviews to determine tooling concepts, design options, testing plans, and specifications. Being a Tool Design Engineering Manager provides expert input to resolve design issues and innovate solutions. Oversees the design, fabrication, sourcing, and procurement of fixtures, jigs, gauges, cutting and forming tools, carts, racks, and other items to support production. Additionally, Tool Design Engineering Manager ensures design documentation and models for the fabrication of tools are accurately prepared. Controls budgets, costs, resource allocation, and materials required for tools. Typically requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Typically reports to a head of a unit/department. The Tool Design Engineering Manager typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Tool Design Engineering Manager typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience.     The Tool Room Manager is responsible to review production schedules, direct tool makers, review customer requirements and prepare / update the production schedules.

    Qualifications:

    • 10 years of experience performing similar activities in an Automotive environment.
    • Tool and Die Certificate required and ability to operate all Tool & Die room equipment.
    • Must be a leader and able to prioritize jobs.
    • Strong communicator in the English language, both written and oral
    • High level of time management
    • Ability to read and interpret documents such as operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to speak effectively in one on one and group situations.
    • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference as well as apply basic mathematics principles.
    • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
    • Good understanding of ISO, SPC and QS systems
    • Proficient in Microsoft office

    Major Accountabilities:

    • Supervise the activities of tool and die makers in performing the following tasks as well as personally performing them.
    • Plan and schedule all tool room Jobs as per timeline.
    • Schedule ordering of tooling components and supplies.
    • Plan tool room equipment maintenance.
    • Quoting, designing, troubleshooting and development as required.
    • Staff and evaluate tool room employees.
    • Resolve issues with other managers such as press time, sign off, shared equipment etc.
    • Responsible for scheduling and tracking tool build requirements.
    • Monitor costs as an aid for estimating.
    • Arrange and monitor external contracting.
    • Responsible for arranging tryout material from customer.
    • Responsible for arranging die buyoff in customer's press.
    • Represent company during buyoff process.
    • Schedule meetings with lead hands/toolmakers on monthly basis.
    • Follow the preventive maintenance procedures by working with the maintenance department.
    • Generate reports on: Planning and scheduling, Job tracking and die check list.
    • Approve hourly employee's time entries.
    • Keep GM informed of all items pertinent to successful operation of their department.
    • Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned or directed in order to accommodate the customer.
    • Report any deficiencies in systems, facilities, machinery, equipment and/or tools immediately to all appropriate departments.
    • Record and/or report product damage/nonconformities to your supervisor as required.
    • Abide by all company polices including, but not limited to the following: Health and safety, Quality and Environmental Systems, Human resources policies, and Martinrea Employee Handbook.

    Decision Making & Authority

    • Tooling stop production when Quality is in question.
    • Delegation of tasks amongst department.
    • Performance Management; progressive discipline and performance appraisals.
    • Safety and efficiency.
    • Oversee department of approximately 20 people.
