Tool Design Engineer designs and develops tools and machinery used to facilitate and optimize manufacturing processes. Reviews product design and build requirements to determine tooling concepts, design options, testing plans, and specifications. Being a Tool Design Engineer develops designs for fixtures, jigs, gauges, cutting and forming tools, carts, racks, and other items to support production. Utilizes Computer-Aided Design (CAD) to create accurate, complete, and concise design models and documentation to fabricate tools. Additionally, Tool Design Engineer estimates costs, resource requirements, and materials required for tools. May manage the sourcing, quoting, or procurement of purchased tools. Typically requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Tool Design Engineer work is closely managed. Provides Assembly tool and fixture design expertise and services both internally and externally to the Assembly Planning department. Designs and modifies tools/fixtures to aid in the assembly of the vehicle, adhering to BMW standards. Obtains quotes from and interfaces with tooling manufacturers to ensure quality and timely delivery. Coordinates internal manufacturing of prototype tooling. Conducts data transfer with equipment suppliers. Supports equipment projects in data review and quality loops. Provides specialized technical guidance regarding tool design to project leaders/ engineers. Coordinates with international process partners to align support and know-how.
Participates in cross-functional discussions to understand the needed deliverables from design. Actively participates in quality loops to refine the tool design deliverable including verbal explanations, critical thinking and trial/ error. Supports assembly engineers with process simulations. Participates in line trials to actively troubleshoot or refine the tool design deliverable. Understands and models VPS (Value Added Production System) Principles and concepts of Standard Work and Problem Solving. Adheres to 5S and Safety Standards and Principles. Performs other duties as assigned by management.
