SUMMARY OF POSITION

Plan, layout and perform machining operations and bench work to construct, alter and repair tools, dies, fixtures, jigs, molds, etc., of complicated designed to close and exacting tolerances and finish requirements.

Requirements

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Set-ups, adjusts and operates any machine used in the manufacturing process.
• Organizes and determines work procedures and sequences select materials in accordance with specifications and lay out project components for machining operations.
• Performs machining operations requiring set-ups, tool changes, and sharpening of tools.
• Constructs temporary fixtures and jigs, grind special purpose tools; improvise measuring devices to check components.
• Works from complicated blueprints, handbook formulas and specifications.
• Uses scales, micrometers, calipers, indicators, etc., to lay out work, make set ups, operate machines, and check work.
• Performs critical bench operations to construct and finish projects.
• Monitors steel for hardness.
• Maintains machinery through periodic cleaning and oiling.
• Maintains work area in clean and orderly manner.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

• High school diploma or GED. 

Experience

• Operator should have 2-7 years’ experience in the tools and die making operation.
• Knowledge of Bridgeport, Lathes, and Surface Grinders.

Specific Skills/Abilities

• Ability to set up, operate and adjust all machinery used in the manufacturing process, with some to no supervision.
• Knowledge of basic mathematics.
• Ability to continually produce quality parts.
• Ability to occasionally use judgment to compensate for material and tooling variations (trouble shoot) without supervisory direction.
• Ability to administer authority in assisting, directing and training die makers and tool room machinists of lower classifications.

Systems (hardware, software, computer, etc.)

• To perform this job successfully, an individual should be able to use and understand internal software.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Physical Activities include: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing for significant periods of time, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, picking or pinching, grasping, perceive attributes of objects, conveys with other workers, hearing, and repetitive motions. 
• Physical Requirements exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
• Observation Acuity standard is the minimum for machine operators which is visual inspectors involving small defects, small parts, and operating machines using measurement devices. Eye protection required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

• Duties are occasionally performed under conditions such as dust, dirt, heat, cold, and fumes. Duties are frequently performed under noisy conditions. There is occasional exposure to cuts and abrasions. Observation Acuity standard is the minimum for machine operators; where the inspection of the job is at or within an arm’s reach.
