  • The District 8 Medical Examiner located in Gainesville, FL and providing medico-legal death investigations pursuant to Florida State Statute Chapter 406, is seeking qualified applicants for the full-time position of Forensic Investigator. The District 8 Medical Examiner Office serves 7 counties in and around Gainesville, FL.
    This position involves working weekdays and will rotate on-call coverage on nights and weekends with other Forensic Investigators. The ideal candidate must reside within Alachua County to facilitate timely response to death scene investigations.     The Forensic Investigator will function as part of the death investigation team that includes other full-time Investigators, Forensic Technicians, Forensic Pathologists, Director of Operations and other office support staff.

    The Forensic Investigator will perform duties related to conducting medico-legal investigations of unusual, suspicious, or unattended deaths, per Florida Statute 406, and will additionally assist forensic pathologists in their duties as required.

    Specific Duties:

    The Forensic Investigator will receive initial death reports and determine, in conjunction with a forensic pathologist, medical examiner jurisdiction. A principal role of the Forensic Investigator will be to collect investigative information from various sources and agencies, respond to and conduct a death scene investigation and occasional decedent transport under certain circumstances, assess the relevance of the information, and present it to the case medical examiner for analysis in their determination of cause and manner of death. The Forensic Investigator will identify and interface with other agencies involved in the investigation. The Forensic Investigator will also verify and establish the decedent’s next of kin and will function as their primary liaison with the Medical Examiner Office.

    Additional duties will include reviewing death certificates for authorization of cremation. The Forensic Investigator will, on occasion, provide testimony regarding the basic elements of the death investigation as required. This position requires the ability to lift/move a minimum of 150 pounds, and tolerate the handling of decedent remains in various conditions.

    Education and Experience: A minimum of an associate’s degree in biological or physical science, forensic science, criminal justice, or closely related field is desired (a bachelor’s degree is preferred). The ideal candidate will have a background in forensic science, law enforcement, criminal justice, nursing, paramedical response; or will have experience conducting death-related investigations or performing pathologist assistant duties; or equivalent related education and experience sufficient to competently perform essential duties of the job as described above.

    All employees of the District 8 Medical Examiner must successfully pass a thorough background check, possess a valid driver license with clean driving record, and complete pre-employment drug screening. This employer is an equal opportunity and drug free workplace employer.
