Testing Technician, Sr. performs standard testing processes on a variety of equipment and records and analyzes results. Records data from testing in standard formats and provides results to product and engineering teams. Being a Testing Technician, Sr. assists technical teams with recommendations to resolve testing problems, roadblocks or equipment malfunctions that impact the performance or validity of testing. May recommend changes in testing methods or equipment changes. Additionally, Testing Technician, Sr. requires knowledge of industry specific tests and testing equipment. Typically requires an associate degree. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Testing Technician, Sr. works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function.     Position Summary:  

    Your role as a CMT Engineering Field Technician Intern will put you at the forefront of projects that are transforming communities. You will shadow and learn to be an expert in concrete and soils field sampling, testing procedures, verification procedures, and the application of various construction materials. With projects ranging from complex roadway construction to single-family residential communities, you will gain the knowledge and experience necessary to take your skills to the next level.

    Job Responsibilities:

    • Travel to various job sites in a company provided vehicle
    • Learn how to perform routine field sampling and/or testing on construction materials
    • Responsible for the field compaction testing, sampling and observation of soils, stone, and asphalt, utilizing field equipment such as nuclear density gauges or drive tube methods
    • Perform concrete, grout, and masonry quality control tests through sampling and visual observation, performing slump tests and collecting compressive and flexural strength
    • Sample asphalt cores to verify thickness
    • Read maps, blueprints, follow directions, and interpret engineering and construction plans
    • Perform hand augers with dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP) testing to collect data of subsurface conditions for foundations, roadways, and other surfaces
    • Communicate daily with site contractors, other technicians, and project managers verbally and electronically
    • Observe and complete accurate and detailed daily field-testing reports and/or diagrams to clients, supervisors, and project managers
    • Other tasks as assigned

    Qualifications:

    Required:

    • High School diploma or equivalent
    • Must be at least 18 years old to drive company vehicle and for entry onto job sites
    • Valid Driver's License with acceptable driving record
    • Monday – Friday daytime availability (typically 7am-5pm) during May, June, July, August
    • Outdoor work experience 
    • Ability to read, write and use technology including phone and computer
    • Ability to follow company policies and safety requirements

    Preferred but not required:

    • Heavy lifting/manual labor experience
    • Student majoring in Civil Engineering, Environmental Science or similar field
    • Prior experience as field/engineering technician, construction materials testing or related experience
    • ACI, ICC and/or NCDOT/SCDOT certifications and/or willingness to obtain industry certifications
