Telecommunications Engineering Technician assists telecommunication engineers in the design and analysis of telecommunication networks. Creates plans and drawings detailing the layout of routers, circuits, cables, switches, or other telecommunications equipment. Being a Telecommunications Engineering Technician ensures network connectivity for end-users. May evaluate existing networks and recommend design changes to improve performance. Additionally, Telecommunications Engineering Technician requires a high school diploma or its equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Telecommunications Engineering Technician may require 0-1 year of general work experience. Possesses a moderate understanding of general aspects of the job.   • OUTSIDE PLANT TECHNICIAN (TELECOMMUNICATIONS INDUSTRY) 

     

    OVERVIEW:  

    Palmetto Engineering & Consulting, a progressive, employee-owned, consulting firm, is seeking qualified individuals to perform telecommunications outside plant technical services involving cable staking, design, and count assignments – both aerial and buried.

     

     JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:  

    • Observe and inspect the contractors' work in progress to ensure the contract specifications are followed and that exceptions are noted
    • Reports discrepancies between the contract specifications and the job performed by the contractor to the supervisor
    • Communicate with the Project Resident on a regular basis with regard to work changes
    • Performs acceptance tests as directed
    • Completes daily work reports ("Field Observation Report")
    • Completes weekly progress reports listing materials and quantities used; also responsible for inventory and review of material shipped to the job site
    • Prepares "as built" records using staking sheets and schematics by revising drawings to reflect field changes
    • Upon completion of the job, revises cable schematics recording the "as built" changes; submits fiber-loss reports, cable schematics, and final "as-built" records
    • Completes Final Inspection to review the completed project and the clean-up
    • Obtains "right-of-way" information from the Department of Transportation on subject areas prior to staking; if private "right-of-way" must be obtained, reports to the Project Resident for necessary action (such as client communications, assistance with easement negotiations, etc.)
    • Surveys, verifies and locates existing utilities; verifies existing plant by referring to the highlighted map of roads and using a locator device; paints lines along the side of the road to designate the existing facilities and the proposed facilities; stakes proposed facilities
    • Maps out the road and all structures in the subject area
    • Revises staking sheets to add new facilities as work is completed listing all the required information; submits staking sheets to CADD Technician for entry to update the computerized records of the subject area; reviews the updated staking sheets for accuracy and submits to supervisor

     

     QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

    • Outside Plant Telecom work experience along with OSP engineering, a plus.
    • Experience in designing and documenting Outside Plant Copper or Fiber Optic Cable facilities (UG, Aerial, Buried).
    • Minimum of a High School diploma or equivalent; some college preferred.
    • Knowledge of construction practices and techniques related to utility work.
    • Familiarity in obtaining Permits including railroad, highway, pipeline, etc.
    • Experience with GIS helpful.
    • Ability to complete work according to customer specifications and requirements.
    • Must be able to work independently, travel weekly to job site as needed, possess a valid driver's license, and be able to pass a substance abuse screening test.


    COMPENSATION PACKAGE:

    Hourly Pay is dependent upon education, experience, and credentials.  The benefits package includes Medical, Dental, Vision, Disability Insurance, Life Insurance, ESOP, and a 401k Plan.


    HOURS:  Typically, Monday through Friday; 5 hours a day
