We’re looking for a Director of Innovation and Technology to lead, develop, and implement the organization's overall technology strategy. This person will ensure that HSRI’s technology initiatives align with our principles, goals, and mission. They will identify emerging technologies and trends and make recommendations when appropriate to the executive and leadership teams. This role involves managing a multidisciplinary team, driving innovation, optimizing technology resources, understanding technology needs, and playing a pivotal role in data governance to support projects and programs.

Responsibilities
• Evaluate and implement innovative solutions for the organization and in collaboration with project staff that enhance research capabilities and productivity
• Manage research and development activities to stay ahead of industry trends, explore new technologies, and maintain a competitive edge
• Prepare regular reports and presentations on the department's performance, projects, and technology trends
• Monitor the performance of technology systems and identify opportunities for optimization and efficiency improvements
• Oversee the development of new products and/or enhancements to existing products, ensuring they align with the organization’s technology vision
• Set standards by ensuring that technology solutions are scalable, secure, and meet performance requirements
• Collaborate with other team leads, researchers, project directors, and management to understand their technology needs and provide solutions
• Manage product and team performance by setting goals, establishing priorities, and conducting regular performance evaluations
• Manage departmental budgets and resources efficiently, ensuring cost-effectiveness
• Identify organizational technology needs and support the process of hiring or identifying appropriate vendors. Evaluate and negotiate contracts with technology vendors and service providers.
• Work in collaboration with others to develop and implement a comprehensive data governance framework to ensure data quality, privacy, and security across the organization
• Establish and maintain data management policies and procedures, including data classification, access controls, and data lifecycle management
Other Duties and Responsibilities
• Provide oversight for technology-related projects, ensuring they are executed effectively, on time, and within budget
• Collaborate with project managers, data stewards, and researchers to identify and mitigate risks
• Act as a liaison between the technology department and other staff
• Establish and maintain data management policies and procedures, including data classification, access controls, and data lifecycle management
• Additional duties, as assigned
Supervisory Responsibility
• Lead, mentor, and motivate a diverse team of technology professionals, including engineers, developers, database administrators, and support staff
• Foster a collaborative and innovative team culture that encourages knowledge-sharing and cross-functional cooperation
• Work closely with teams to understand their technology needs. Communicate effectively with executives and other clients and funders.
Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field; advanced degree preferred. 8-10 years of experience in technology leadership roles, preferably in a non-profit, research, or innovation-focused environment
• Familiarity with cloud platforms such as Azure and AWS
• Familiarity with database management systems
• Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills
• Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
• Ability to manage and lead multidisciplinary teams
• Ability to align technology initiatives with overall business objectives
• Ability to define and support data stewardship
• Financial acumen for budget management
• Ability to thrive in a dynamic and collaborative work environment
• Ensure ongoing training and development for technology staff. Keep the team's skills up to date with industry advancements.
Hours
Full-time – 40 hours
This position allows flexibility in core hours.
Location
This is a remote position with an option to work from our Cambridge, MA, office, which is accessible by public transportation. HSRI does not permit remote work arrangements based in California, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and outside the United States.
Must have unrestricted authorization to work for ANY employer in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa at this time.

Salary Range
$154,288 - $196,037
Pay is commensurate with skills and experience.
