    SUMMARY

    Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC) is seeking a Writing Center Coordinator to oversee tutoring and academic support, specifically for all levels of writing. The Writing Center Coordinator provides individual and group tutoring, creates and implements workshops, study sessions, and facilitates tutor training. The Writing Center Coordinator provides leadership for Writing Center peer tutors and hourly employees. The Writing Center Coordinator is integral to attaining the mission of Learning Services to design academic programming and learning environments that cultivate a community of engaged learners. This position supports the strategic priorities of Student Success and Quality Programs & Services.


    POSITION DESCRIPTION
    • Provide walk-in tutoring to students who are developing papers, presentations, lab reports, etc. for KCKCC courses.
    • Assist with all levels of the writing process, from brainstorming to final drafts.
    • Aid students who need guidance in securing research information.
    • Help with correct format for papers, such as APA and MLA.
    • Aid with sentence and paragraph development for students enrolled in developmental composition courses.
    • Help students in identifying, developing, and implementing learning strategies and study skills to increase self-regulation to promote success and progress toward graduation.
    • Develop and maintain the tutoring schedule based on student and faculty needs.
    • Develop and facilitate workshops and academic programming to support student learning and success.
    • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise part-time peer and professional tutors.
    • Conduct assessment of program and student learning outcomes.
    • Perform outreach for the Writing Center via class visits, attendance at student orientation sessions, campus events, and division meetings.
    • Collect data from tutoring attendance and service offerings to compile into monthly, end-of-semester, and annual reports.
    • Develop outreach and marketing strategies to create awareness of the Writing Center and tutoring opportunities.
    • Maintain working relationships with academic departments and connect students with other campus resources.
    • Create and maintain supplemental materials to assist in student learning.
    • Participate in campus committees as appropriate.
    • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team including but not limited to Honors Education, Online Education, and Student Accessibility & Support Services.
    • Other duties as assigned by appropriate administrator.
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    • At least a Master’s degree in Education, English, or related field from an accredited college or university.
    • One (1) year of leadership or supervisory experience.
    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • Experience working in a learning center in higher education.
    • Experience in coordinating, developing, planning, and monitoring all aspects of a tutoring program.
    • Experience in recruiting, training, and evaluating tutors.
    • Experience in reviewing, evaluating, and assisting in selecting materials used in tutoring and supplemental learning.
    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
    • Knowledge of various teaching methods and instructional technologies to improve student learning.
    • Knowledge of Blackboard and/or other learning management systems.
    • Ability to determine students’ academic needs and implement a plan to provide necessary assistance.
    • Ability to assess student learning.
    • Proficient in a variety of computer and technology-related software programs and web-based technologies.
    • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to provide troubleshooting and problem resolution for internal and external parties regarding tutoring and other academic supports.
    • Growth mindset and strong interest in helping students grow academically.
    • Commitment to ongoing professional development through continuing education, attendance at professional conferences, webinars, and literature to keep abreast of emerging trends, technology, and best practices in the field.
    • Ability to work with a variety of individuals including students, staff, and faculty with an understanding and an appreciation for the philosophy and mission of an urban, open-door, comprehensive community college.

    WORK SCHEDULE

    Standard work hours are between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Must be able to work a variable schedule/hour to meet operational needs. May require evening and weekend hours.
