Writing Pathfinder for Little River Institute/NASNTI

  • The LRI/NASNTI program provides grants and other assistance to non-tribal, Native American-serving institutions, to enable institutional improvement and to expand the capacity to serve American Indian students. The funds from this grant will be used to improve American Indian retention and degree completion through culturally appropriate models and strategies of mentoring, tutoring, teaching, and social engagement.
    The Writing Pathfinder for the Little River Institute (LRI) provides support in the implementation of NASNTI grant objectives, focusing specifically on the continued development of student leadership roles, the planning and implementation of significant LRI or Sweet Grass Society programming (orientation, annual pow wow, etc.), as well as providing tutoring support for American Indian students as needed. The Writing Pathfinder will provide day-to-day support for the Director and the program, serving as a key resource for students seeking assistance with engagement, mentorship, and academic support. As a representative of the Little River Institute, the Pathfinder will work closely with Little River Institute project team and university faculty to promote the successful retention and college completion of American Indian students.
    Duties and Responsibilities
    1. Support the development and implementation of the program’s student orientation and Peer Mentor programs;
    2. Provide mentorship for students in need of cultural, academic, or institutional guidance;
    3. Work closely with other Little River Institute project team to promote retention and degree completion among American Indian students;
    4. Provide one-on-one and small-group tutoring for American Indian students as needed, occasionally including evenings and weekends;
    5. Schedule and coordinate tutoring sessions for various courses, including: Developmental Writing, College Writing I, Elementary Technical Writing;
    6. Serve as a resource for students seeking assistance with organizational and study skills;
    7. Work cooperatively with faculty to become familiar with course material as currently presented;
    8. Work cooperatively with faculty and instructional technology staff to prepare digital tutorials for remote and on-site student use;
    9. Employ professional accepted and empirically supported best practice services;
    10. Help students define goals, plan action, and gain insight into their personal development;
    11. Serve on University committees as needed.
    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
    • Bachelor’s degree;
    • Demonstrated ability to properly handle confidential information.


    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
    • Advanced degree in Student Affairs Administration, Education, English, or other related field;
    • Demonstrated experience in program development and delivery;
    • Demonstrated experience in college or university student support;
    • Demonstrated experience working with Native American communities;
    • Demonstrated awareness of mental health challenges and issues among Native American college students;
    • Demonstrated flexibility and willingness to work in a dynamic environment;
    • Demonstrated sound management and organizational skills;
    • Demonstrated ability and willingness to work collaboratively with diverse students, faculty, and staff;
    • Demonstrated literacy and proficiency with Microsoft Office Applications.

    Title IX Coordinator

    The Title IX Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the University’s compliance with federal and state discrimination and harassment laws, including Title IX.
