    Position Summary:

    Native Student Services (NSS) is seeking a writing tutor to help Native students get a positive jump start with their GERs! Native Student Services is a productive office with a small, but great team! The student tutor candidate will have an opportunity to develop and learn new skills while working with students, faculty and staff. The student must have the ability to be proactive and work independently. Expectations are high, hours flexible, and schedule is consistent. We are a very student friendly office and our goal is to help retain students through academics and social/cultural activities. We encourage you to be a part of our team in making a difference! Federal Work study eligibility preferred.

    Duties:

    100• Provide individualized consultation with students and all disciplines, at all levels, and at all stages of the writing process. This includes, but not limited to: • Consulting with students regarding global writing aspects such as thesis, evidence development, flow, logic, and effective argument. • Tutoring students in pre-writing strategies including interpreting, understanding, generating, organizing, and elaborating ideas. • Tutoring students in specific English areas, primarily in grammar, mechanics, and sentence structure by effectively communicating the principles and techniques of the subject area. • Consulting with the students regarding English language skills development. • Work with students to improve their writing skills while helping them understand professor expectations. • Acting content matter expert for Writing • Provide Writing tutoring services in a culturally responsive manner and with varied techniques • Perform duty with little to no direct supervision • Effectively relay information verbally and in writing • Represent Native Student Services and the University in a professional and inclusive manner. • Help create a welcoming atmosphere • Adhere to academic integrity and privacy guidelines • When appropriate, refer students to additional campus learning resources • Communicate effectively with students, coworkers, and supervisors • Participate in workshops and outreach events • Attend trainings and meetings as scheduled • Help maintain electronic records of student visits • Report incidents or events as they occur to supervisors • Other duties as assignedEssential
    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Ability to work assigned hours, some remote, some possibly in-person, possibly including some evenings or weekends.

  • Experience working with Native peoples and/or knowledge of Native cultures.

  • Ability to effectively communicate the principles and techniques of English writing for academic purposes.

  • Communicate effectively.

  • Must possess excellent problem solving, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.

  • Familiarity with MS-suite applications, particularly MS Word, and Google suite programs.

  • Take direction and work as part of a team.

  • Understand written and verbal instructions.


Preferred Experience & Education:
Minimum of cumulative GPA of 2.0 with a 3.0 average in Writing/English coursework.
Must have successfully completed Writing 211, 212, 213, 214 or an equivalent Writing/English composition course.

Required Experience & Education:

To be eligible for student employment, an applicant must:
a. Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours
in the current semester of employment; or b. Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters; and c. Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade
point average (GPA) or approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or his/her designee. d. Students enrolled in non-traditional programs of study will be considered eligible for student employment with the approval of the Senior Student Services
officer. e. An applicant must provide evidence of enrollment as outlined above to substantiate employment eligibility.



Salary Information:

This is a Student Assistant 2 position with a minimum starting pay of $12.03 per hour.
