    Description of Work Unit
    CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at CSU. CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DOD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

    Position Summary
    Program Support Specialist-Technical Writer/Editor (Professional Level II Special) position is available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML). The position is located at the US Army Garrison, Pohakuloa Training Area (USAG-PTA) on the Big Island in Hawaii. The work location is approximately 40 miles west of Hilo, HI and 25 miles from Waimea, HI.

    As a CSU cooperator at PTA, the Specialist supports program and writing/editing needs across our technical teams within the Natural Resources Program. Primary duties consist of:
    • Technical writing and editing: Developing briefs, other written materials and assembling reports consisting of natural resources/biological topics, in collaboration with other project staff to support technical reporting, planning and outreach needs; developing/maintaining basic templates in MSWord; creating and managing graphics; assembling and formatting reports; and reviewing and editing documents. The specialist collaborates with other staff and government points of contact on concepts and themes, intents and purposes, outlines, drafts, and revisions of technical writing projects. Editing includes reviewing documents to ensure they are well organized, concise, clear, logical, and follow rules of grammar and punctuation. This could include any level of editing, from minor copyediting to significant revisions. It also requires using MS Word features such as styles and headings, sections, tables of contents, headers/footers, and other advanced Word functions to ensure that documents have consistent formatting, are stable and visually appealing.
    • Administrative support: These tasks include assistance to the Senior Program Manager and other CSU staff. Tasks include project facilitation and coordination, primarily through scheduling and communication with other staff; supporting public outreach needs including developing materials (e.g., posters, displays, brochures, articles for print and digital publication), planning and coordinating events at PTA or at other locations; coordinating some office logistics, scheduling and other needs related to staff and visitors; tracking employee training, certifications, and access passes; tracking project equipment; assisting with some human resources actions to include employee onboarding/orientation, tracking required training, facilitating access passes, maintaining administrative files, and serving as a liaison to human resources personnel at CSU.

    The Specialist is supervised by the Senior Program Manager. Position is contingent upon funding for continued CSU support for natural resource management on PTA. Relocation expenses may be available; conditions apply.

    Work location is dependent on the needs of the partner/project/role. In some instances, positions may require staff to be fully in-person. In other instances, hybrid or remote arrangements may be possible.

    Required Job Qualifications
    • BS/BA in natural science field, journalism, English, administration, or other related field and at least 2 years of experience with technical writing (technical documents, reports, scientific protocols, articles, and briefings) OR Master’s degree in a natural science, English, administration, or related field and at least 1 year of experience with technical writing (technical documents, reports, scientific protocols, articles, and briefings).
    • Demonstrated writing editing skills.
    • Advanced skills and knowledge of Microsoft Word (e.g., templates, headings, styles, advanced formatting, etc.).
    • Proficient with Windows-based computers and MS Office Suite software for data management, record keeping, information retrieval, and report generation.
    • Experience in project management or coordination, administrative support, or similar capacity.
    • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
    • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

    Preferred Job Qualifications
    • Formal training / certification and/or demonstrated skills in project management, technical writing/editing, or human resources management.
    • Experience onboarding employees.
    • Demonstrated experience planning and executing community outreach and public education events and supporting materials such as PowerPoint presentations, briefings and articles.
    • Demonstrated ability to edit and manage professional-quality technical reports.
    • Experience developing risk assessments and safety plans.
    • Experience with organizing and archiving printed documents and electronic files/file systems, including versioning of shared or edited documents.
