Teacher Elementary School prepares lesson plans and instructs students in an assigned elementary school. Develops and implements grade appropriate course work, activities, and assessments to meet the academic, developmental, and social needs of children in K-5 classroom setting. Being a Teacher Elementary School monitors and guides classroom behavior. Resolves classroom issues and conflicts. Additionally, Teacher Elementary School evaluates and monitors student's performance and progress. Participates in development and implementation of Individual Education Plans for specific students. May participate in implementing special programs for students. May supervise teaching assistants. Requires a bachelor's degree. May require state-specific teaching license. The Mead School, a small, Pre-K-Grade 8 progressive independent school in Stamford, CT, founded in 1969, seeks a talented elementary school educator for a self-contained classroom in Kindergarten. This work requires expertise in Kindergarten Math and Language Arts, as well as experience in the unique needs of Kindergarten-age students. Most of our Kindergarten students come from other preschool programs, so this is their first experience at Mead. Mead’s teachers are referred to as Curriculum Directors because we give teachers the autonomy to design much of their own approach to Language Arts and Math. Mead has specialists in all other curriculum subjects.
Our class sizes range from 8-12 students (one class per grade). A successful candidate for this position will:
Have taught both Mathematics and Language Arts in Lower Elementary School.
Be skilled at differentiating instruction, particularly for capable children who often learn differently, i.e. experience in special education not required but a plus.
Understand the importance of developing authentic relationships with students and prioritize this in practice.
Be familiar with a broad spectrum of children’s literature.
Have training in both a phonics approach to teaching reading, as well as more holistic methods.
Be interested in and capable of designing and implementing curriculum.
Be creative and flexible, i.e., open minded about designing and adapting curriculum.
Be an enthusiastic collaborator with the K-2 team on integrated curriculum and opportunities for project-based learning.
Have experience working with parents of elementary school children; good at clarifying, listening, and facilitating conversation.
Have excellent written and oral communication skills.
