  • Maine Trust for Local News
  • South Portland, ME FULL_TIME
  • The Maine Trust for Local News, part of the National Trust for Local News, seeks an outstanding, accomplished journalist to rethink and lead its sports journalism, the bulk of which entails covering high school sports under the brand “Varsity Maine.”

We are Maine’s largest network of newspapers and websites, publishing daily and weekly newspapers throughout the state. They include the Portland Press Herald, Maine’s largest and most widely read newspaper and website.

Currently our sports staff is very closely aligned to our print brands. We intend to operate as a statewide team covering sports with a digital-first mindset. We’re looking for someone to work collaboratively across departments with product, audience and marketing to make this a reality.

We are an ambitious news organization with high standards and a talented staff, and we need a superb journalist to lead this important initiative. We need to play in the digital space like never before, with videos of game highlights and athlete interviews, accelerated social media engagement, and virtual events. We aspire to be the go-to source for everything about high school sports in Maine.

High school sports is the bread-and-butter of our sports department and where we want to spend the most effort. But our coverage goes beyond that, of course. We have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to the outdoors, from skiing and snowmobiling to hunting, hiking and canoeing.

You’ll be based in the Portland Press Herald newsroom but make regular trips to our other newsrooms to engage with the staffs there.

The Maine Trust for Local News is owned by the National Trust for Local News, a national nonprofit dedicated to conserving, transforming and sustaining local news organizations.

    We are an EEO employer.

If you are the best at what you do and share our passion for ambitious high school sports journalism, this is the opportunity you’ve been waiting for. You will be part of Maine’s finest and largest newsgathering operation, and you’ll live in a region with an extraordinarily high quality of life. A minimum of five years of news experience is required.

The right candidate for this position possesses all of these qualities: You enjoy working collaboratively. You see story ideas everywhere. You ask a lot of questions and prosecute stories. You think visually. You see interactive and multimedia potential in every part of high school sports coverage. You have a proven track record of working collaboratively with peers to build audience and engagement.

NEPA was designed to benefit both Americans and the environment. Further attempts at shutdowns or delays for beneficial infrastructure projects, like Alabama’s Sabal Trail pipeline, will cost taxpayers more time and millions of dollars. We need to cut red tape and burdensome regulations, put Alabamians to work, and develop our great state for future generations. Modernizing the NEPA process will be a great first step.
