    The Educational Talent Search (ETS) program has been helping low-income and potential first-generation students successfully graduate from secondary school and enroll in post-secondary education since 1977. Targeting 13 high schools in the Long Beach/Los Angeles area, ETS advisors guide students in their search for higher-education enrollment and career possibilities. College tours, career planning, and scholarship and financial aid resources are among the many things ETS offers for students attending target schools.     About the role: 

    Innovative, authentic, and inspiring applicants are sought to apply for the CSULB TRIO Educational Talent Search (ETS) Director position, a 100% federally-funded TRIO program. Under the general direction of the Senior Director of Educational Equity Services, the Project Director is responsible for the overall administration, management, design, supervision, and evaluation of the TRIO ETS programs, especially the planning and implementation of the comprehensive support services for high school students to be “college ready.” Applicants must show a social justice commitment to closing opportunity gaps. 

     

    Your Day Will Likely Include:    

    Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:  

    • Ensure the program complies with the U.S. Dept. of Education TRiO regulations, administrative policies, and legislation governing two (2) Educational Talent Search programs 
    • Responsible for planning and directing two (2) complex academic preparation programs and ensuring their inclusion into the broader spectrum of university programs and operations 
    • Provide leadership and vision for transformative, innovative services 
    • Ensure all Federal Program objectives are in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations as it relates to the U.S. Department of Education, TRIO ETS Programs 
    • Lead the preparation and submission of Annual Performance Reports to the U.S. Department of Education, CSULB, CSULB Research Foundation, and any other entities that may require them 
    • Adhere to CSULB’s University and CSULB Research Foundation Grants and Contracts policies 
    • Develop, implement, and monitor administrative policies, procedures, services, and standards for the program. 
    • Develop, manage, and administer annual budgets, approve expenditures, monitor line items, and reconcile with CSULB research Foundation Business Office and federal offices 
    • Advertise, interview, hire, train, mentor, supervise, and evaluate all employees 
    • Oversee the development of programming for the academic year and summer components of the programs 
    • Measure and evaluate the performance and outcomes of programs and seek continuous improvements through student development 
    • Responsible for supervision of approximately three (3) full-time Program Coordinators and approximately twenty-five (25) part-time College Advisors Mentors (CAMs) 
    • Implement appropriate equity and disciplinary actions in accordance with CSULB Research Foundation personnel policies 
    • Plan, direct, coordinate and review the work of staff, establishing clear work plans and performance appraisals that are measurable and impactful 
    • Assess training needs and implement staff professional development by providing access, resources, and direction to appropriate training or seminars 
    • Work with the program staff to coach, provide direction, mentor, assign and oversee work of CAMs 
    • Prepare and maintain program documentation for federal and state site visits and/or audits 
    • Program budget administration for the academic year and summer components, including Summer STEM programming 
    • Supervise the identification and selection process for participants and the academic needs assessments of participants to determine eligibility for the Program 
    • Supervise the planning, designing, and implementing of student development activities and workshops, and cultural programming 
    • Oversee participant assessment, monitoring/implementation of services and activities 
    • Document and review the effectiveness of the program and its services 
    • Collect, analyze, and use high-quality and timely data from program, campus, and state longitudinal and reliable third-party sources to enable more data-informed decision-making 
    • Maintain communication with ETS partners, personnel, parents, and participants 
    • Build partnerships with all ETS partners including high schools, campus programs, and Community Agencies who assist in student referrals and monitoring 
    • Inform academic, administrative, and other service units at CSULB of ETS objectives, services, and procedures 
    • Participate in University committees, community and professional programs, and activities furthering the interests of program participants 
    • Serve on department, campus, and external committees, work groups, and coordinating bodies as needed with staff, students, and Executive Team. (Scholarship Committee, Beach Pathway Reader, Hearing Officer, etc.) 
    • Lead efforts in the development of proposals for funding 
    • Supervise Program records and data maintenance for all ETS participants in accordance with USDOE regulations 
    • Travel to represent programs at federal grantee meetings and attend conferences for professional development 
    • Provide resources and/or referrals to all students to support to academic success, basic needs, health and wellness, and/or create a student-ready environment

    Experience You Will Bring to The Organization:  

    • Bachelor of Arts or Science degree in social or behavioral science or related subject required, master’s degree preferred. Three (3) additional years of experience required for each year of education lacking 
    • Minimum five (5) years of administrative experience in designing, managing or implementing a similar or related program 
    • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the target area and unique problems of low-income, first-generation persons seeking higher education 
    • Experience in program planning, development and implementation 
    • Professional or personal experience in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting program participants 
    • Bilingual English/Spanish desirable 
    • Commitment to the goals and objectives of the program and the mission of ETS 
    • Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of first-generation and low-income students 
    • Understanding of cross-culture values regarding education, and the ability to establish rapport with target population 
    • Must be self-directed, organized, and have the ability to work within a complex university and team setting 
    • Ability to develop and maintain positive and proactive relationships with key stakeholders at the local, state, and national level 
    • Must have the ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning, implementing, and evaluating program work assignments 
    • Contribute to equitable and inclusionary work to support student success that strengthen retention and graduation 
    • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment 
    • Understand the importance of using inclusive language that does not promote gender/ethnic coding, discrimination, and/or selective pronoun usage for faculty, staff, and students 
    • Must have the ability to work a flexible schedule regarding evenings and weekends, and especially extended hours during the summer months 
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills 
    • Experience working with various computer programs including MS Office Suite, and various online and social media programs 
    • High degree of initiative and ability to work without constant supervision is required 
    • Must have experience working in team settings, work well with others, function well under pressure, handle multiple tasks concurrently, and remain professional at all time 
    • Must be able to plan program activities and services, manage time effectively, prioritize tasks, and meet tight program deadlines 
    • Must be capable of communicating effectively with Program participants and their families, high school, postsecondary institutions, and community agencies personnel 
    • Must have a valid driver’s license 
    • Must be eligible to pass the DOJ fingerprinting review and background check 
    • Must have a good credit rating to allow for the handling of large sums of federal funds and travel expenses. 

     

    The anticipated annual base salary range for this position is $70,000 – 90,000 DOE.
