    The City of Ames is conducting a recruitment to establish a Civil Service eligibility list for this classification. The list will be valid for up to one year from the date of certification by the Ames Civil Service Commission and may be used to fill one or more vacancies in this classification. In addition, City of Ames Civil Service employees who have previously held Civil Service status in this classification and are interested in voluntarily demoting or laterally transferring into the current vacancy must submit their application by the deadline.

    Under general direction of the City Manager, performs work related to the development, coordination, implementation, and engagement of City staff and the public in a broad range of sustainability-related activities.

    This role is responsible for the overall coordination of strategies and initiatives including partnering with City staff, City committees, City administration, and the general public to execute the City’s Climate Action Plan.

    Compensation Philosophy:

    The City of Ames has a compensation philosophy that the starting pay for our merit salary ranges establishes the salary for employees who meet minimum requirements of a position. The median of any merit salary range is for an employee who can reasonably meet all expectations of the position responsibilities without initial extensive training. In order for employees to have an opportunity to grow within their position, we may consider a candidate's education, experience, and skills above the minimum requirements when looking at a salary closer to or slightly above the median. The median for this position is $85,618 annualized.

    Examples of Essential Job Functions



    • Serve as a resource for all departments to ensure work aligns with the organization’s sustainability goals and strategic direction.
    • Track, evaluate impact, and present the City’s progress on sustainability activities and provide recommendations to City administration.
    • Participate on the internal Sustainability Team and serve as active member and a subject matter expert for the committee. Partner with committee members to help complete team activities.
    • Provide staff support to the Mayor’s Climate Action Plan Leadership Taskforce.
    • In partnership with various City departments, coordinate and host events and learning opportunities, that will advance staff’s understanding of sustainability projects. Generate and share relevant content to coach, empower, and engage staff. Deliver training as required.
    • Identify, prepare, and administer grants that support the City’s Climate Action Plan.


    Other Job Functions:

    Qualifications

    Required Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in environmental science, sustainability, or a related field and at least two years of experience planning and implementing practices around sustainability into policies, and procedures; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in facilitation of teams and/or training events is preferred. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

    Preferred Education and Experience: Related experience with a public employer and/or local government is also preferred.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Necessary to Perform Essential Functions:

    Considerable knowledge of methods, techniques, philosophy, and objectives in identifying, navigating, and addressing challenges associated with city wide sustainability and environmental work.

    Strong skill in verbal and written communication, including facilitation and presentation. Skill in planning, coordinating, and carrying out complex projects and multiple tasks. Skill
    in developing and analyzing statistical data. Skill in the use of spreadsheet, database, and word processing software. Skill in planning and conducting surveys. Interpersonal skills in interacting with others in a variety of business situations, including business/social settings such as interacting with service providers and external subject matter experts. Skill in communicating with diverse employee groups utilizing tact, diplomacy, and sensitivity; skill in establishing policies and procedures; skill in planning and organizing work activities to meet established objectives; skill in maintaining records and preparing reports.

    Ability to identify, navigate, and address challenges associated with environmental work. Ability to motivate, collaborate and negotiate with diverse individuals and groups. Ability to develop effective working relationships with employees, management and outside individuals and groups. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, co-workers, other City employees, the public, and members of other organizations, committees.     Environmental Conditions: The employee ordinarily works in an office environment and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

    Equipment Essential to the Job: Computer hardware such as keyboard, monitor, printer, etc. Computer software, talent acquisition system, word processing, spreadsheet, internet, database, etc. Reference materials. General office equipment such as writing utensils, files and file cabinets, telephone, copy machine, calculator, etc.
