Surgical Neurophysiologist performs testing and monitoring of the nervous system during surgery to assist the surgeons in avoiding or reducing complications such as paralysis, hearing loss, or stroke. Conducts Electroencephalograms, Electromyographies, Somatosensory Evoked Potentials, Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials, direct nerve testing, and other modalities intraoperatively, and communicates findings to the operating room team. Being a Surgical Neurophysiologist typically requires a bachelor's degree in related area. Requires Certification in Neurophysiologic Intraoperative Monitoring (CNIM) from the American Board of Registered Electroneurodiagnostic Technologists. Additionally, Surgical Neurophysiologist typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Surgical Neurophysiologist occasionally directed in several aspects of the work.     Responsibilities:

    • Complete all necessary electronic workflow in accordance with the departmental policies ensuring all data is secure and accessible post-operatively.
    • Record relevant patient history and review with the oversight clinical neurophysiologist.
    • Participate in all department specific mandatory training.
    • Continually advance skills set by reading books, professional journals, and online training materials
    • Perform portable, difficult and/or unusual testing, particularly evoked potentials in the intensive care unit and the operating room with only telemedicine supervision while maintaining the maximum safety for patients.
    • Obtain standard recordings, report findings to the oversight clinical neurophysiologist.
    • Understand thoroughly cerebral vasculature and apply this knowledge when performing transcranial doppler studies.
    • Ability to adapt to change in the work environment, manage competing demands and deal with frequent change, delays or unexpected events. Service minded; drive to provide best care and service for patient and surgical team.
    • Operate transcranial doppler to obtain necessary readings and calculate findings for requesting physician. Calibrate and maintain the equipment for optimal performance; understand the functioning of all the testing equipment; is able to assist in troubleshooting in conjunction with the vendors and is able to perform more complex repairs.
    • Apply suitable electrodes on predetermined measured positions on the patient's head, trunk, and extremities. Select predetermined electrode combination; check their performance as well as adjusting for non-standard montages as needed.
    • Keep labs fully supplied, all work-stations clean and all equipment in working order. Provide hard copy reports to requesting physician for interpretation in addition to plotting samples when needed.
    • Able to recognize discrepancies between patient's ordered testing and their diagnosis. Keep abreast of the advanced technology in the Neurodiagnostic field. Continue to acquire knowledge of the following; normal brain anatomy and function, diseases and electrical patterns of the brain.
    • Ability to accurately setup and monitor brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BSER), compound nerve action potentials (CNAP), electrocorticography (ECOG), electroencephalography (EEG), cranial nerve EMG/MEP, upper and lower extremity EMG/MEP, sphincter EMG/MEP, phase reversal, upper and lower extremity somatosensory evoked potentials, direct cortical stimulation (DCS), and trans-cranial motor evoked potentials.
    • Operate the equipment according to departmental policy in order to obtain optimal results.
    • Recognize artifacts; differentiate them from evoked potential patterns and take appropriate steps to eliminate them.
    • Monitor other physiological parameters during testing as described in the departmental policy
    • Ability to recognize real-time changes in data and report changes to the oversight clinical neurophysiologist
    • Exercise judgment during testing or intraoperative monitoring for the need of the oversight clinical neurophysiologist or physician’s intervention.
    • Collaborate with anesthesia team regarding optimum delivery of anesthetic based on clinical assessment and document requested modalities.
    • Understand thoroughly various disease states and factors that relate to them, various medication effects, clinical changes or complications to ensure high technical quality.
    • Communicate with attending physician in a timely manner determining a plan for which modalities to be performed to procedure. Document any request made by surgeon according to departmental policy.
    • Display and label waveforms for marking, measuring and calculating information such as latencies, amplitudes, and conduction times following established guidelines and protocols.
    • Transport equipment between facilities in a safe and secure manner. Prepare/setup testing carts within departmental guidelines ensuring equipment and patient's safety is taken into consideration.
    • Perform all necessary troubleshooting in situations of suboptimal results prior to and during any diagnostic testing procedure or intraoperative procedure.
    • Assist medical staff during nonstandard procedures. Assist with research collection data. Assist with the administrative duties of the supervisor during absences. Function as a consultant for junior staff providing guidance in all situations and use judgment to determine course of action.
    • Training for this position will require temporary relocation

    Licensure, Certifications

    • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
    • Driver's License
