Surgeon - Heart Transplant examines, diagnoses, and surgically treats patients with end-stage cardiac disease. Surgically replaces a diseased or damaged heart with a healthy heart. Being a Surgeon - Heart Transplant reviews patient history and confirms need for surgery. Determines which instruments and method of surgery will be most successful in achieving the desired outcome. Additionally, Surgeon - Heart Transplant may provide medical personnel with direction concerning patient care. May provide in-service training as needed to address new technology in health care treatment. Provides charting in compliance with all laws and regulations. Requires a MD degree from an accredited school. Typically reports to the chief of surgery. Requires a license to practice. The Tulane Cancer Center BMT Transplant Coordinator RN facilitates and coordinates the evaluation of potential transplant candidates, recipients hospitalized for transplantation and post-operative complications and transplant recipients followed as outpatients.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
Educates patients and families about the transplant process, evaluation, waiting phases, and long-term follow-up and care; respond to the psychosocial needs of the transplant patient and family.
Assist with discharge planning in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary health care team.
Communicates with referring physicians regarding the patients status in all phases of the transplant process and attends weekly BMT conferences.
