  • The Library Director is charged with setting a forward-thinking course for the Schafer Family Library, the Academy Archives, and associated programs to promote information literacy and scholarship, connect students, faculty, and staff with the appropriate scholarly tools, and to support the pursuit of discovery. The Library Director will actively support and fulfill KUA’s mission “to create a deep sense of belonging for every member of our community. Through intentionally designed experiences and challenges, our students develop the knowledge, voice, and character to live with purpose and integrity.”
    ABOUT THE POSITION
    OVERALL ADMINISTRATION
    • Ensures the alignment of the library’s resources and programs with the academy’s curriculum, Scholar programs, and other initiatives, and with the American Association of School Librarians’ Standards for the 21st Century Learner and School Library Evaluation Checklist.
    • In consultation with administration and faculty, establishes and implements library policies and procedures, including those pertaining to collection development, circulation, library instruction, hours, and use of space.
    • Selects and maintains an automated library system and preserves the integrity of the database according to American Library Association standards.
    • Ensures that cataloging and inter-library loan procedures meet standards set by OCLC and New Hampshire’s Inter-library Loan system.
    • Maintains the library’s website in collaboration with the Communications Office.
    • Administers the library budget and oversees all library and archives expenditures, including assessment of needs and the purchase of all resources, materials, and supplies, and capital expenditures. Manages the departmental purchasing card and invoices.
    • Oversees the security of Miller Bicentennial Hall through administration of the door locking system.
    • Oversees the Academy Archives, including long-term planning, program development, and supervision and safeguarding of the collection with appropriate security and environmental measures.
    SUPERVISION
    • Oversees the work of the archivist/archives assistant(s).
    • Hires, trains, and supervises part-time library aides, including scheduling and payroll.
    • Coordinates with the Academic Office about evening study permissions and procedures.
    • Schedules the evening library duty faculty.
    • Manages the selection, training, and supervision of student library proctors
    SPACE
    • Advocates for and provides an inviting and attractive space for inquiry, collaboration, and quiet study.
    • Coordinates the use of library spaces, including the Class of 2014 board room, for instruction, meetings, author readings, Admission Open Houses, Arts performances and other events.
    • Coordinates the use of study rooms throughout Miller.
    • Conducts surveys and observes activity to determine library use and adjust services and hours.
    • Shares responsibility with other library staff for opening, closing, and staffing the library. Staffs the library from 8am to 4pm on weekdays, every other Saturday from 8am to noon, and one evening per week.
    REFERENCE, INSTRUCTION & OUTREACH
    • Teaches and models the critical thinking skills required to locate, evaluate, synthesize, and apply information.
    • In support of the curriculum, Scholar programs, and student and faculty interests, models and teaches information literacy and academic integrity, including knowledge of copyright, fair use, and intellectual property, with an eye toward lifelong learning.
    • Through classes, presentations, and individual consultation, cultivates an atmosphere of discovery and promotes intellectual freedom and access to information.
    • Provides professional development for faculty in the use of information and digital literacy tools through presentations and individual guidance.
    • Provides reference and readers’ advisory service and access to materials in the library’s collections, both physical and digital.
    • Organizes special events throughout the year, such as an annual book fair fundraiser and author readings.
    • Oversees a rotating program of informational and topical displays.
    • Oversees the efficient operation of the circulation desk.
    • Fosters a love of reading and learning, exploration, creativity, and innovation.
    • Initiates and coordinates programs with nearby institutions, such as Dartmouth College.
    COLLECTION
    • Builds and enhances the library’s print and digital collections to align them with the curriculum and student and faculty interests, and to provide broad opportunities for reading and learning.
    • Selects, evaluates, and maintains subscriptions to numerous electronic library resources (current examples include Gale History, Salem Literature, Academic Search Premier, the Noodletools citation builder, and LibGuides).
    • Actively seeks to improve digital resource access for students and faculty on and off campus through ease of authentication and use.
    • Oversees the maintenance of physical materials in the library, including mending, repair, and replacement as appropriate.
    • Continually evaluates the relevance of both print and digital collections to academic programs and the academy’s priorities. Oversees the de-selection and discarding of outdated materials and equipment to ensure relevance and currency.
    • Coordinates student, faculty, and staff requests and provides access to resources within and beyond the school.
    • Stays abreast of current resources and acquires materials that enhance the academic program.
    • Seeks input from all members of the school community for additions to the collection.

    PROFESSIONAL
    • Maintains active membership in and engages with professional associations, such as the American Library Association (ALA), Association of Independent School Librarians (AISL), American Association of School Librarians (AASL), New Hampshire librarians (NHAIS), Librarians of the Upper Valley (LUV), NAIS Archivists, New Hampshire Archives Group, and New England Archivists.
    • Serves on Academic Council and other internal committees, and shares expertise during faculty meetings.
    • Participates in professional development activities offered to faculty.
    • Participates in conferences, workshops, and continuing education for both the library and education professions.
    • Keeps current in professional practices and developments, information technologies, and educational research applicable to the library program and the school as a whole.
    • Keeps current with young-adult literature and services and with research about adolescent development and learning.
    OTHER FACULTY DUTIES
    • In addition to the primary responsibility for the library, the Library Director participates in the life of the school through student advising, management of the yearbook, evening and weekend duty rotations, and all-school events.
