    Departmental Overview

The various entities that comprise Student Musical Activities (SMA) at UC Berkeley-the UC Choral Ensembles, UC Jazz Ensembles, and the California Marching Band-have served the University for over 135 years through the many contributions of its student-musicians. Each SMA program provides students with an extracurricular music education and numerous opportunities for performance and instruction. This singularly unique offering also develops students' skills in arts leadership, administration, and community service.

The Director of UC Choral Ensembles (UCCE), a position established in 1947, manages a multifaceted choral music program that provides students with robust and authentic opportunities to perform in solo, chamber, concert, and theatre ensembles. Appearances at public performances may include concerts, recitals, sporting events, special events, university ceremonies, and a variety of other settings. Primary ensembles include:

Cal Chorale - mixed voices | large concert chorus
UC Alumni Chorus - mixed voices | large, multi-generational concert chorus
Golden Overtones - high voices | select ensemble
UC Octet - low voices | select ensemble
Cal Jazz Choir - mixed voices | select ensemble
Noteworthy - mixed voices | new music ensemble
Perfect Fifth - mixed voices | Renaissance ensemble
Additionally, the Director of UCCE provides institutional support and oversight for BareStage, a 60-70 member theatre troupe that presents 4 productions annually-2 plays in the fall, and 1 play and 1 musical theatre production in the spring. The UCCE Director supports student directors, casts, pit orchestras, and stage crews by providing artistic counsel, rehearsal mentorship and financial guidance, as well as helping ensure access to facilities, use of proper safety equipment, and adherence to copyright law.

UCCE's student government includes five student-officers, artistic and business managers for each ensemble, and a number of smaller roles. The position of Director of UCCE is unique among college choral programs in that it combines the traditional role of a music educator with that of a student mentor and advisor. With support from Cal Performances and the University, the Director of UCCE works to provide opportunities for student leadership in the areas of musical instruction and performance, community outreach, arts administration, financial management, and fundraising.
