  • Essential Job Functions:
    • Read and follow blueprints, sketches, and other instructions
    • Unload and stack steel
    • Unload and stack prefabricated iron and steel so that it can be lifted with slings
    • Align structural and reinforcing iron and steel vertically and horizontally, using tag lines, plumb bobs, lasers, and levels
    • Make, weld, and cut structural metal in fabricating shops
    • Cut, position, and bolt down steel bars to reinforce concrete
    • Connect steel columns, beams, and girders with bolts, wire, or welds
    • Use shears, rod-bending machines, and welding equipment to cut, bend, and weld the structural and reinforcing iron and steel
    • Erect steel frames
    • Attach/Rig cables to steel then to the crane
    • Signal crane operators who lift and position structural and reinforcing iron and steel
    • Hoist steel into place in the framework
    • Position steel with connecting bars and spud wrenches
    • Work with drift pins to align the holes in the steel with the framework holes
    • Use plumb bobs, levels and laser equipment to check alignment
    • Layout and drill bolt holes in structural steel
    • Bolt or weld piece in to place
    • Set reinforcing bars into forms to hold concrete
    • Fasten bars together with wire
    • Place spacers under rebar to lift bars off deck
    • Cut bars with metal shears and torches
    • Reinforce concrete with welded wire fabric
    • Tighten cables with jacking equipment
    • Make sure all pieces are fitted properly and complete repairs as necessary

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
    • Knowledge or materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings or other structures such as highways and roads.
    • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance
    • Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics and their applications
    • Ability to control operations of equipment or systems
    • Ability to watch gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure machines are working properly
    • Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions or approaches to problems
    • Ability to coordinate two or more limbs while sitting, standing, or lying down.
    • Ability to see details at close range
    • Active listening skills
    Required Minimum Qualifications:
    • High School Diploma, or Equivalent
    • Valid Driver License and clean driving record
    (1 year of directly related work experience may qualify to substitute 1 year of education to meet the education requirement)
    Required Training & Certificates:
    • North Slope Training Cooperative (NSTC) Training, preferred
    • Attends training sessions, seminars and appropriate educational classes required by department

The incumbent is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, vehicles and equipment.

    The employee must be able to physically travel by air within, and out of, the State of Alaska.
