Strategic Planning Manager manages the analytical and research activities supporting an organization's strategic, short-term, and long-range goal planning function. Oversees data collection and conducts organizational reviews to identify the business's strengths and weaknesses and evaluate operational effectiveness. Being a Strategic Planning Manager leads the research of emerging trends, expansion opportunities, competitive threats, and the viability of outside business partners. Develops recommendations for internal business process improvement. Additionally, Strategic Planning Manager designs and executes methods to track and measure organizational performance data to use for planning. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a director. The Strategic Planning Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Strategic Planning Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

    Managed under the UC Santa Cruz Office of Research, the Innovation & Business Engagement Hub (IBE Hub) is the point of entry for industry partners and entrepreneurs to connect with UC Santa Cruz discoveries, innovations, resources, and talent. Within the IBE Hub, the industry alliances team is responsible for developing and stewarding industry research collaborations to diversify research funding and accelerate innovation. The team initiates and manages industry partnerships across the entire relationship lifecycle and works closely with faculty, researchers, and program leads to facilitate industry engagement. The industry alliances team also collaborates with partners in the IBE Hub focused on innovation transfer, corporate relations, and innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives.



    JOB SUMMARY

    Reporting to the Director of Industry Alliances & Licensing, the Strategic Initiatives Manager will develop, coordinate, and implement industry alliance plans and activities around emerging and established strategic initiatives with a research and innovation focus. The Strategic Initiaves Manager will have responsibility for initiating, maintaining and expanding partnerships in collaboration with campus stakeholders; coordinating and planning outreach activities and events; and facilitating agreement and engagement processes across a number of strategic initiatives pertaining to research centers and other focused research activities, innovation and technology commercialization programs, industry and research consortia, and regional activities centered on the Silicon Valley Extension campus and Monterey Bay Education, Science and Technology Center.

    Salary Information: Salary Range: $73,700 - $89,150/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

    JOB DUTIES

    • Plans and implements proactive outreach to potential industry partners, tailoring communications to explain how a strategic alliance with the university research program will serve their unique and custom needs. Facilitates outreach activities and bridges potential areas of interest.

    • Engages prospective partnerships and coordinates meetings with university research and innovation program leadership to pitch forming an industry partnership. Coordinates events aligned with strategic initiatives involving campus, community, and industry representatives.

    15% -
    • Supports planning around the development and expansion of university strategic initatives by integrating industry partnership structures and strategies.

    10% -
    • Builds and cultivates relationships and ongoing communications with industry partners. Identifies ways to improve the relationship to meet partner needs and achieve alliance goals. Facilitates agreement processes and helps partners understand financial and contractual obligations.

    10% -
    • Analyzes partner and industry needs, recommending a strategy to expand the industry alliance program, services, and trainings. Launches improvements to programs through creating timelines and leading regular meetings to ensure project successfully meets goals.

    • Expands existing partner agreements through analyzing partner needs and recommending ideas to grow the relationship. Implements initiatives to maximize the relationship.

    • Assists in developing and executing marketing and communication plans to targeted academic, government, and industry relations communities. Effectively communicates and reports program status, key metrics and outcomes, and recommendations.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • Bachelor's degree in science, business, or a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
    • Experience developing university-industry partnerships and managing across a relationship lifecycle.
    • Ability to identify, generate, and qualify new leads for industry partnering opportunities.
    • Strong verbal and active listening communication skills. Ability to break down complex concepts and communicate them in an understandable way.
    • Highly developed political acumen skills and social perceptiveness. Skilled business development tactics to persuade and influence.
    • Ability to work with a diverse group at all levels of the organization including faculty, staff, students and industry partners. Strong sense of ethical conduct that will inspire confidence and motivation.
    • Strong critical thinking skills. Productive in work volume, speed, quality and consistency. Ability to see projects through to completion on deadline and satisfy industry partner and university goals.
    • Ability to perform all commonly applicable functions in business software suites. Effectively use customer relationship management and marketing and outreach software applications.


    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • Advanced degree in science, business, or a related area.
    • Experience in applied and/or scientific research and innovation with skills to identify, evaluate, and present research and technology commercialization collaboration opportunities.
    • Knowledge of University of California industry sponsored research, intellectual property, and corporate support policies and guidelines.
