    Detailed Job Description
    This is a two-year position with the possibility of extension to end September.

    In the final report of the 2012 Task Force on Health Care Careers for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Community, it recommended building pathways and pipelines for this community. This taskforce was a partnership between RIT/NTID, Gallaudet University, University of Rochester Medical Center, and Rochester Regional Health and they recommended more training and mentoring opportunities that have been tailored for deaf and hard of hearing aspiring healthcare workers. This partnership, known as the Deaf Hub, began with an emphasis on biomedical science careers that is funded by NIH's National Institute for General Medical Studies. The Deaf Hub is now expanding to provide training and mentorship opportunities in clinical and practicing careers in healthcare.

    The statistician provides statistical consulting, and develops and contributes intellectually to research study design and methodology in collaboration with physicians and scientists conducting biomedical, life sciences, clinical, and population health research. The statistician will evaluate, prepare, and analyze data by selecting appropriate statistical methods. Products expected include summarized reports with a write-up of methods and interpretation of results for research manuscripts, presentations, reports, research grant and contract proposals and/or post-award reports to funding agencies. The statistician will help supervise student research assistants and postdocs involved in data analysis.

    Job Responsibilities
    • Evaluates, prepares, analyzes, and interprets existing data and sources, selects and applies appropriate statistical methods, and prepares summarized reports
    • Develops research study designs for research projects
    • Advises on best practices and established policies, procedures, and regulations and conducts biostatistical analysis for internal and external stakeholder groups
    • Contributes to preparing, writing, editing, and submitting research manuscripts, presentations, reports, research grant and contract proposals and/or post-award reports to funding agencies

    Required Minimum Qualifications
    Advanced degree (MS or MPH, PhD preferred, but MS or MPH with 4 years of experience will be favorable) in biostatistics, statistics, mathematics, epidemiology, or related fields.

    Experience
    New graduates are encouraged to apply.
    Experience using a variety of statistical and computer programming languages (e.g. SAS, STATA, R) is required as well as managing databases within RedCap.
    The successful applicant will have excellent interpersonal and written communication skills and be able to demonstrate the ability to work independently.
    Experience in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access applications
    Working knowledge of SQL and associated applications
    They will be detail-oriented, able to work independently, possess interpersonal, problem solving, and organizational skills.

    Specialized Skills
    • Proficiency in a sign language is required, coupled with an ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of DHH individuals.
    • Experience working with the Deaf community on research projects analyzing health and/or behavioral data
    Preferred:
    2 years experience with a broad range of statistical methods and approaches are preferred - including handling longitudinal and repeated measures data, survival methods, methods for handling missing data, and generalized linear models.
    Prior experience in biomedical/clinical research is desirable.
    The preferred candidate should be able to critically think through a research study and perform analysis and programming to extract data.
