GENERAL SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Dir, Facilities and Engineering and Coordinator Stationary Engineer, facilitated in conjunction with the Building Services and Maintenance Manager, operates and maintains high pressure boilers and auxiliary equipment, takes necessary action to maintain steam supply, maintains records, and processes correction action and emergency requests for maintenance during afternoons and nights.
These duties are to be performed in a highly confidential manner, in accordance with the mission, values and behaviors of Mercy Hospital and Medical Center. Employees are further expected to provide a high quality of care, service, and kindness toward all patients, staff, physicians, volunteers and guests.
Operates and performs routine maintenance on high-pressure boilers. Insures that an adequate supply of steam is available at all times, and anticipates fluctuating needs.
Changes burners, switches from gas to oil and adds or removes the number of boilers in operating as conditions change. Observes constantly, pressure, temperature and volume controls, and makes necessary adjustments.
Analyzes boiler feedwater, steam and condensate return, and adjusts chemical feed systems as required. Places chemicals in retaining vessels and determines their rate of
flow into the systems. 80%. Monitors, starts and stops chillers as required. Provides: Proper water flow balance for condensers. Proper water flow balance for evaporators.
· Proper refrigerant level to be maintained proper operation of cooling tower and fans as required. Proper control of cooling tower chemicals. 10% proper operation of condenser and evaporator circulating pumps. ·Protection against evaporator freeze-up. maintains condensers free of air and other non-condensable gases, operating purge unit as required automatically or manually. ·Periodically cleans and prepares boilers for inspection. Cleans on a daily basis equipment and boiler room operates and maintains necessary auxiliary equipment such as deaerator, water softener, dealkalizer, chemical feed systems, compressors, pumps, fans, centrifugal chillers, valves, and condensate system. Make adjustments and minor repairs to equipment.
Performs scheduled inspections of equipment. Maintains operating logbook, and records operating conditions.
Records on an hourly basis items such as pressure, temperature, and volume in the daily inspection.
High School Diploma required.
Minimum of three years experience as a stationary engineer in a hospital. Must have a current City of Chicago Stationary Engineer’s license.
Skills: Must remain alert, and be able to react to changing conditions. Must be willing to work rotating shifts. Demonstrate required leadership necessary to perform any emergency requirements that may arise, or are assigned.
Abilities: Ability to maintain a clean and safe working environment by keeping area organized, neat, painted, and hazard free. Ability to analyze the job and plan safe work procedures, utilizing new and salvaged materials.
